Toto Wolff said he frequently reflected on the calls he made to the team. The team principal and CEO of Mercedes F1 revealed this amid the enforcement of a “no-blame” rule within the group.
According to the Mercedes honcho, he kept questioning his contribution to the team all the time since he felt a strong bond with it.
“It’s tough, because I keep hammering myself,” Wolff said to the press. “You could say this is a physics problem and not a mystics problem or not on, let’s say, an organizational topic.”
“It’s more that we got the physics wrong – it’s science, mechanical engineering,” he added. “I keep questioning myself, my contribution all the time, because I feel myself as the team, as do many others.”
Clearly, his statements reflect his investment in the team, not only financially but also both psychologically and emotionally. However, he cleared out that there has been no blame game within Mercedes F1 since 2013.
“We blame the problem and not the person. We are a safe environment, nobody got fired because of nonperformance. We always find solutions,” said Wolff. Such a statement certainly reflects his leadership skills at play.
Ironically, Wolff takes responsibility if one department in his team does not perform. For him, it only means he didn’t hire the right people or they don’t have the right framework.
The Mercedes F1 chief believes everyone on the team is doing their best. He expressed pride in everyone not pointing fingers at each other when things don’t turn out the way they wanted them to.
Mercedes F1 finished P2 in the 2023 season Constructors Championship with 409 points. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton took third place in the drivers’ rankings with 234 points while George Russell grabbed the eighth position with 175 points to cap the year.
