In recent times, Google Maps has become a saviour for many, while travelling to new and unseen places or even commuting to unvisited destinations within a city. Besides helping people reach their destination more effectively and easily, Google Maps will now be able to save your vehicle’s fuel and reduce your running costs with a recently introduced feature. The said feature was offered only in the USA, Canada and Europe to date, and will now be available to Google Maps users in India.

google maps to save fuel

As per this new feature, the users of Google Maps will be able to save fuel, depending on the type of vehicle you are using. Based on the inputs received from various aspects like road conditions and real-time traffic, Google Maps will provide you the most optimal route which will put the least strain on your vehicle’s engine, suspension and tyres, thus enhancing its fuel efficiency marginally. This feature will calculate a route which might or might not be similar to the shortest distance to the destination fed by you.

If you wish to use this feature to obtain the most optimal route on Google Maps which will help you save fuel and improve your vehicle’s efficiency, you have to click your profile picture after opening the application of Google Maps. After that, click on “Settings” and then on “Navigation”, which will open “Route Options”. Select the options of “Prefer fuel-efficient routes and “Engine type”, after which this option will be activated to use for your vehicle.

To use this feature effectively, you have to open the “Google Maps” application and search your destination on the search bar provided. Tap on “Directions” and swipe up to tap on “Change engine type”, before clicking on “Done”. Choose the engine type of your vehicle among the given options, which are petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric. If you do not select any engine type here, Google Maps will select petrol as the default option for further calculations. Also, for electric vehicles, this feature will not show stoppages for recharging them.

Google has clarified that this particular feature of finding fuel-efficient routes in Google Maps will yield different results for different engine types. As per this feature, if you select a diesel engine, the feature will prominently focus on highways, while for electric and hybrid vehicles, the feature will rely more on roads with stop-and-go traffic due to their better efficiency in such conditions, with regenerative braking doing its job.
