Yesterday, it was announced that the Mahindra Scorpio-N, one of the most popular SUVs in India recently introduced in Australia, has scored 0 stars in a recent assessment by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). This news has made many buyers of this SUV a little worried. However, we are here to tell you that there is nothing to worry about. Yes, you heard that right. The Scorpio-N is still a five-star safety-rated vehicle according to the Global NCAP, and there are other reasons behind its 0-star rating in Australia.
Why You Shouldn’t Worry?
We understand that while the zero-star rating may sound alarming, it is extremely important to understand the context behind this rating. For those who may not be aware, the newly homologated Mahindra Scorpio-N’s safety features were tested under the latest and more rigorous testing protocols introduced by ANCAP in 2023. So, this 0-star rating is a result of compliance issues with these new standards, rather than a fundamental flaw in the vehicle’s design or structure.
The newest set of assessment rules of the Australasian NCAP program have mandated the requirements of features like ADAS and other Autonomous safety features. However, these rules were recently introduced, and when the Mahindra Scorpio-N was homologated in Australia, these rules were not mandatory. Now, the Scorpio-N is one of the first vehicles to be tested under these rules, and hence it has failed to score any stars in the ANCAP program. The ANCAP program, according to new rules, will give any vehicle a zero-star rating if it does not come with ADAS.
Understanding the Safety Assessment
The ANCAP safety rating considered all variants of the Mahindra Scorpio-N sold in Australia and New Zealand. The evaluation highlighted several safety concerns, particularly the absence of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features, such as autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and a lane support system (LSS).
In the ANCAP assessment, the Scorpio-N scored 17.67 out of 40 points in Adult Occupant Protection, 39.27 out of 49 in Child Occupant Protection. Additionally, it scored 14.94 out of 63 points for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 0 out of 18 for Safety Assist, as it lacks any form of active collision avoidance features.
Mahindra Scorpio-N still has 5 stars from GNCAP
When the Mahindra Scorpio-N was tested by the Global NCAP, it was reported that the Mahindra Scorpio-N passed with a perfect 5-star safety rating. In the tests held in December of last year, the Scorpio-N managed to score 29.25 out of 34 in adult occupant protection, while it received 28.94 out of 48 in child occupant protection. The Mahindra Scorpio-N also performed very well for side impact, which is done under the new test protocol.
Mahindra’s Future Plans
In response to the safety concerns raised by the ANCAP assessment, it has been reported that Mahindra has announced its plans to incorporate ADAS safety features. The company stated that as part of a ‘mid-life update’ of the Scorpio-N, the company will offer the SUV with ADAS and other collision avoidance safety features.
The company currently offers the XUV700 with Level 2 ADAS. The list of ADAS features offered with this SUV includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Emergency Breaking, and so on. All these features are controlled using the radar, sensors, and cameras that are installed all around the car. Most likely, the company will offer the same systems on the updated Scorpio-N facelift.
