Bharat NCAP has shared its first ever crash test result today. Tata Harrier facelift has become the first car to be tested by the India safety crash test agency and it has scored a perfect five star rating. The new Harrier and the Safari have already been tested by Global NCAP and both the vehicles have secured a 5 star rating from the Germany-based safety crash test agency.
The new crash test was done in India. However, the scores and the detailed analysis are not available yet. B-NCAP officially announced that Harrier has got 5-star rating in its tests. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also congratulated Tata Motors and shared a video where he is handing over the certificate to Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd and Tata Passenger electric Mobility Ltd.
Nitin Gadkari said on his social media, “Congratulations to TataMotors for the historic achievement! Presenting the first-ever Bharat – NCAP 5-star rating certification to the new Safari and Harrier is a momentous stride in enhancing consumer safety. BNCAP stands as India’s independent advocate for vehicle safety, setting benchmarks to global standards. A commendable feat that resonates with the commitment to excellence and the well-being of the Indian consumer.”
Receiving the certification, Mr. Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., said, “Bharat-NCAP is a significant step forward as it provides customers with a credible, objective score to evaluate the safety aspects of various vehicles. Informed customers taking optimal decisions will further foster the rising preference for safer vehicles in the country. We acknowledge and appreciate the collaborative efforts of the government, regulatory bodies, and the automotive industry in this pursuit. At Tata Motors, safety is at the core of our DNA and we are honoured to win this maiden Bharat-NCAP certification with an exemplary 5-star rating for two of our vehicles. We remain committed and will continue to work towards improving vehicle safety holistically.”
Tata updated the Harrier earlier this year
The updated Tata Harrier has arrived with several exterior design tweaks and an improved cabin layout that offers more features. Additionally, it now provides enhanced safety features with standard six airbags and ADAS in top-spec variants. While the Harrier remains mechanically unchanged, it still delivers the reliable 2.0-litre 170 PS diesel engine with two transmission options: 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic.
As the first automaker to send a car to Bharat NCAP for crash test ratings, Tata Motors has led the way for other manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra, and Kia, who have also begun submitting their models for testing. It’s great to see that all carmakers and automotive brands operating in India have shown their support for Bharat NCAP. They recognize that conducting vehicle tests in India instead of abroad for Global NCAP crash tests will be more cost-effective.
Introduced in August 2023, Bharat NCAP is a safety program initiated by the Central Government of India. Its main objective is to evaluate the safety of passenger cars sold in the country through rigorous crash tests. This program brings standardized safety ratings to the Indian automotive market. As a result, Global NCAP has decided to discontinue its “Safer Cars for India” initiative, no longer conducting crash tests for cars manufactured in India. To carry out the Bharat NCAP crash tests, the Central Government has partnered with the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) located in Pune. This collaboration ensures that cars sold in India undergo comprehensive safety evaluations to protect the interests of consumers.
