The same scooter had 634 traffic rule violations registered against it since February 2022. Traffic officers were on a lookout for the TVS Scooty Pep+ with the registration KA04 KF 9072. The police finally tracked down the scooter. RT Nagar traffic police did the job and caught the vehicle and the owner.
All the violations were recorded by the automatic Intelligent Traffic Management System camera according to the police. The power of the vehicle is Mala Dinesh and is a resident of Gaganagar. After buying the scooter in 2021, the first traffic violation is recorded on 23rd Feb 2022. Currently, there are 634 violations and all of them are either for not wearing a helmet while riding or for talking on the mobile phone. The latest violation was recorded on 17th December 2023.
The total amount amassed by the scooter is Rs 3.25 lakh! It is about four times the price of the scooter. Dinesh, the owner of the scooter was unaware of the challan and frequently passed through the RT Nagar area. On Tuesday, he went to the police station and requested them to release the scooter as he would not be able to pay such a massive fine. However, the police have denied the requests and said that the scooter will be released only after fine amount is paid. The police have issued a notice to the owner as well.
Camera-based traffic violation system
Most Indian cities are grappling with high numbers of traffic violations, and one of the reasons for the increase is the intelligent cameras that record each violation separately on a daily basis. This means that if someone passes through a junction multiple times in a day and commits a violation each time, they will receive fresh fines for each offense.
To tackle this issue, traffic police are planning a special drive to collect pending fines from the top 100 violators under each traffic police station’s jurisdiction. A team of officers will visit the violators’ homes to collect the fines and ensure that these violations are addressed.
Most major cities in India now have a network of CCTV cameras that are closely monitored by the police. Through these cameras, officers track registration numbers and issue challans for violations. However, there have been instances of wrong online challans due to faulty number plates. Thankfully, there is a redressal portal provided by the traffic police to challenge these incorrect fines.
The government and authorities have been actively working to increase the amount of fines imposed for violations. The aim behind this increase is to deter people from violating traffic rules and thereby make the roads safer for everyone.
It’s disheartening to know that India has one of the highest rates of road accidents in the world, including a significant number of fatal accidents. Many of these accidents occur due to reckless driving and a lack of adherence to traffic rules. The installation of surveillance cameras aims to reduce the number of people who engage in dangerous maneuvers on the roads, ultimately making our streets safer for all road users.
