Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Mahindra Thar are some of the most affordable 4×4 SUVs available in the Indian market. Both of these SUVs are quite popular among off-road enthusiasts, and we have already seen several videos and images of them. A variety of modification options are also available for these SUVs in the market, and we have featured some of them on our website as well. Both of these SUVs have a large fan base in the country. In this video, both Mahindra Thar and Maruti Jimny perform off-road.
The video has been shared by Anshuman Bishnoi on his YouTube channel. He is an experienced off-roader and posts videos related to off-roading and dune bashing online. In this video, the vlogger and his friends actually take three Mahindra Thar diesel vehicles and a Maruti Jimny to an obstacle course. This is a natural course they use to explore the off-roading capabilities of their vehicles.
The surface is a mix of dry mud and loose sand, which becomes trickier to drive on after rains. The mud gets slippery and sticky, making things challenging. For this video, they chose two obstacles to compare how both SUVs behaved. Anshuman’s Mahindra Thar has brand new off-road spec tires and is a diesel automatic SUV. The Jimny, on the other hand, also has all-terrain tires and comes with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Only one of the Mahindra Thars has a manual transmission. The first obstacle is a steep climb with diagonal ruts on the track, which would showcase the articulation and traction control of the SUVs. Mahindra Thar was the first to attempt the climb. The SUV was put in 4H, and the driver simply climbed up without much drama. The MLD worked in the Thar and helped lock the rear wheels without losing traction.
Thar vs Jimny off-roadWhen the Jimny attempted the climb, the driver engaged the car in gear and slowly started climbing up. In the first attempt, the SUV could not crawl up. The driver stopped, rolled back, and then attempted the climb with a bit more momentum. This time, the SUV successfully climbed up, and the vlogger was impressed with it. He really liked how the traction control on the Jimny worked. He mentioned that both Jimny and Thar were on par when it comes to performance on this obstacle.
The next obstacle was a bit trickier. There was a downward slope with a curve that actually took the car up the slope. Maruti Jimny was the first to attempt this. The loose soil and gravity were pushing the car away from the track, and it wasn’t maintaining the line the driver wanted. The driver slowly turned the SUV, and once it was aligned with the upward slope, he drove the car up the slope.
The SUV made it to the top. Mahindra Thar was next in line. The SUV managed to turn on the slope, but it was unable to climb up. The driver attempted the stretch a couple of times; however, it didn’t make any difference. Later, they realized that the track was slightly damaged, and there was a deep rut that was not letting the car go ahead. To prove the point, they even attempted to drive the Jimny up the same stretch, and the result remained the same.
After finding the fault, they came up with a solution to attack the slope at high speed. This worked for Mahindra Thar; however, in the Jimny, the SUV was unable to gain momentum, and by the time it reached the point where the rut had formed, the SUV was losing traction and power, making things difficult. The vlogger mentioned that both Jimny and Thar are great for off-roading; however, both have their own positives and negatives.
