An Electric Car Made the First Ever Run From the North to the South Pole of the Earth

Scottish adventurers Chris and Julie Ramsey have successfully completed their groundbreaking nine-month, 17,000-mile (23,350 km) Pole to Pole EV expedition, marking the world’s first journey from the North to the South Pole since 1823. Although they reached their destination on December 15, the news could only be shared after the restoration of satellite communications. The journey was undertaken in a modified Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE electric vehicle, courtesy of Icelandic specialist company Arctic Trucks. Notable enhancements include specialized 39-inch tires, matching wheel arches, anti-ice equipment, and reinforced bodywork. The power plant and suspension largely remained standard, with a slight increase in ground clearance.

Adapting to weather conditions, the adventurers utilized a 5kW wind turbine or a prototype solar hybrid charger to charge their Ariya. In instances where these options were not feasible, a gasoline generator, considered essential for Arctic travel, served as a backup. Chris stated that the Pole to Pole EV initiative aims to demonstrate the viability of electric vehicles as substitutes for conventional diesel expedition vehicles in polar regions.

Canada to Ban Cars With Internal Combustion Engines

Canada to Ban Cars With Internal Combustion Engines

The Canadian government has officially released the final version of its carbon neutrality strategy, which includes a ban on the sale of new cars with traditional internal combustion engines starting in 2035. As part of this strategy, automakers are mandated to boost the production and importation of electric cars into the country, beginning in 2026.

The government’s directive, effective immediately, sets a target for green cars to constitute 20% of the primary car market this year. This category covers not only pure electric vehicles but also plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) with an electric range of 50 miles (80 km) in Canada. The objective is to achieve a 60% share by the year 2030. This will cause a swift adaptation to electric cars for Canadians.

To boost the realization of these ambitious targets, Canada has introduced the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) credit system for automakers. Specifically, from 2024 to 2025, each company will earn credits for selling environmentally friendly cars in the domestic market. This will force manufacturers to increase the availability of their clean vehicles within the country’s borders.

Tesla Is Going to Face a Huge Recall Campaign

Tesla Is Going to Face a Huge Recall Campaign

Tesla has issued a record-breaking recall, impacting more than two million electric cars, acknowledging that its Autopilot system lacked sufficient safeguards against misuse. The decision to recall, prompted by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) identification of a defect, applies to various Tesla models, including:

Model 3 (2017–2023) Model S (2012–2023) Model X (2016–2023) Model Y (2020-2023).

As part of the recall, Tesla will be required to update the Autosteer automatic steering system. The issue at hand involves situations where drivers may be unprepared to take over steering, and there’s uncertainty about whether the system is operational. The NHTSA has highlighted in its report that this lack of clarity and protection against potential driver errors increases the risk of accidents. This extensive recall follows an in-depth investigation by the NHTSA spanning several years. The agency will continue to monitor Tesla’s efforts to rectify the Autopilot system’s shortcomings.
