This custom-built BMW R80/7 is powered by a 798 cc engine and is a true piece of art
This 1978 BMW R80/7 is a motorcycle unlike any other we’ve seen before and while it’s very quirky, someone recently paid a staggering $17,000 for it. So, what did they get for their money?
As you probably could have guessed, this R80/7 is far from your typical BMW two-wheeler. It has been transformed by Upcycle Motor Garage in Texas to now include an exposed driveshaft, a Motogadget m-Unit, a springer front end, a solo saddle, a distinctive triangular headlight, 16-inch wheels clad in Firestone tractor tires, and a two-into-one upswept exhaust.

The changes don’t end there as the original frame has also been altered so the 798 cc engine now sits lower than it originally did. This engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission and there is a new 1.25-gallon fuel tank. Given that the bike is from 1978, it comes as little surprise that it is slightly lacking in the braking department with just a single disc at the front and a drum brake at the rear. However, we suspect the new owner will probably only use it for cruising around at low speeds or simply display it as an art piece.
It’s probably not particularly comfortable to ride either as it only has simple fork springs up front and a single spring under the seat. The riding position is also rather wacky and not suited to long highway road trips. This is the price you pay for style, I suppose.
The listing on BaT notes the bike has been driven just 639 miles (1,028 km) since it was overhauled but doesn’t specify exactly how many miles the original engine has been driven. What it does say is that the 798 cc mill has received new piston rings, coils, and is supplemented by a lithium-ion battery.
