The Chinese consumer electronics designer and manufacturer Xiaomi has globally unveiled its much-anticipated SU7 electric sedan. This all-new electric sedan will offer an impressive 673 bhp and a range of 800 km on a single full charge. Once launched, it will go head-to-head with the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-Tron GT. At the moment, it has not been revealed when it will be coming to India; however, it will be launched in China next year in 2024.
Xiaomi has been relentlessly working to enter the EV market, as it announced three years ago. Finally, after waiting for a while, the company, during its event held in Shanghai, unveiled the SU7 EV sedan with Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun on stage. The brand-new Xiaomi SU7 is based on the company’s state-of-the-art electric car platform codenamed Modena. This platform has been designed and engineered to support both 400-volt and 800-volt electric architectures. The company aims to offer versatility in powertrain options, including single- and dual-motor drivetrains.
Exterior Design and Dimensions
Starting off with the appearance, the all-new SU7 has been designed with aerodynamic efficiency in mind. The car features smooth body lines with little to no sharp edges. It gets LED headlights and DRLs on the front and a low-slung bonnet. The car also features diamond-cut alloy wheels and a silhouette similar to that of a Porsche Taycan and Audi e-Tron GT.
According to the company, the aesthetics of the SU7 come courtesy of Xiaomi’s dedicated in-house design team, led by Sawyer Li, who has helped in designing the BMW iX and Circular Vision Concept. In terms of dimensions, the SU7 measures in at 4,997mm in length, 1,963mm in width, and 1,440mm in height. As mentioned, the SU7’s sleek and aerodynamically efficient design provides it with a drag coefficient of just 0.195. Its wheelbase, at 3,000mm, surpasses that of the Porsche Taycan by 100mm.
Powertrain and Motors
At the moment, the Chinese electronics manufacturer has introduced a completely built-from-scratch powertrain for the SU7. The company has developed three in-house electric motors which have been named V6, V6s, and the powerhouse V8s or ‘HyperEngine.’ According to Xiaomi, its base V6 motor generates 299 bhp and 400 Nm of torque. While the V6s, compatible with the 800-volt architecture, adds an impressive 75 bhp and 100 Nm of torque. Lastly, the dual-motor SU7 model, combining the V6 and V6s, boasts a remarkable 673hp and can do 0-100 kmph in just 2.78 seconds, which is extremely quick.
Battery Technology
As for the battery pack side of things, the SU7 energy will come with a 101kWh CATL-supplied lithium-ion battery. This massive battery pack will offer a commendable range of up to 800 km as per the Chinese light-duty vehicle test cycle (CLTC). Apart from this, the company has stated that it has not only focused on range but also emphasized rapid charging capabilities.
Xiaomi has stated that the all-new SU7 can gain up to 220 km of range with just a 5-minute charge and an impressive 510 km on a 15-minute charge. Additionally, the platform has been designed to accommodate larger battery variants as well. One of the bigger battery packs will include a 132kWh option. Also, there will be an even bigger battery pack of 150kWh as well. According to the company, it will be providing a range of up to 1,200km.
