Hindustan Motors is a brand that holds a very special place in Indian automotive history. The Ambassador and Contessa are the most popular sedans from this Indian car manufacturer. The Ambassador was used by many politicians and diplomats for decades. However, in rural areas where road connectivity was not the best and public transport was not an option, people relied on a vehicle named the Trekker. This was an extremely practical MUV from Hindustan Motors that was launched in the market to make transportation easier for people living in rural areas. Finding one of these vehicles on the road is quite difficult. Here, we have a video of a 28-year-old HM Trekker that has covered over 20 lakh km and is still performing well.

The video has been shared by MotoWagon on their YouTube channel. In this video, the vlogger talks a bit about the history of the HM Trekker. He mentions that the Trekker seen here in the video is very close to his heart as he used to travel to college from home in this very same vehicle. He speaks about how he used to travel in this Trekker with at least 10 people in the vehicle, including the driver, almost all the time. He speaks to the owner of the Trekker in this video, and the owner mentions that he has been using this car for the last 28 years without any complaints.

The owner of this car also owns a Tata Sumo, but he still prefers the Trekker more. To make it more suitable for carrying people and luggage around, the company never offered this car with any doors. It came with a soft top. People used to customize it to suit their needs after buying it from the dealership. The Trekker originally came with a 1.5-liter non-turbo diesel engine. The owner got the engine repaired twice in the last 28 years. The first time, he only got the rings changed, and the second time, it was a complete engine overhaul. It used to come with a 4-speed manual transmission from the factory. The owner mentioned that he upgraded the gearbox and replaced it with an Isuzu 5-speed unit.

The Trekker uses a ladder-on-frame chassis, and the MUV actually incorporates parts from other Hindustan Motors cars. For example, the headlamps are the same as those seen in the Hindustan Ambassador. The car also comes with a boxy design to make it more practical and spacious for passengers inside. It is actually a sub-4 meter vehicle, but the boxy design allows it to accommodate 3 occupants, including the driver, in the front row, 3 passengers in the second row, and 4 people in the last row with side-facing bench seats.

The owner was extremely happy with the build quality of the vehicle, and it is also very cost-effective when it comes to servicing. Most of the parts can be easily repaired. The vlogger even takes the car for a short spin and mentions that even after 28 years and 20 lakh kms, the car performs pretty well and doesn’t feel crude. It definitely feels old and lacks features; however, it continues to offer good ride quality even today.
