Australian low-cost carrier Bonza has just inaugurated a new route serving the Red Centre, with a flight offering between Melbourne and Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
The new route will see increased tourism to the NT gateway bringing more than 38,000 seats to the region with Bonza fares starting from just $139 per person (one way). The low-cost carrier’s Melbourne to Alice Springs route will operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Speaking on the inauguration of the new route service, Bonza’s CEO, Tim Jordan, emphasized the airline’s commitment to making air travel affordable for everyone.
“Adding Alice Springs to our map means we are taking another giant leap in our mission to make air travel accessible to the many, not the few,” said Jordan
“Territorians and Melburnians can discover all the contrasting wonders both cities have to offer as well as significantly boosting their respective tourism economies.”
Tourism Impact
The Melbourne to Alice Springs route, operating on Tuesdays and Saturdays, is poised to increase connectivity between these two cities.
Joel Bowden, the Northern Territory Minister for Tourism, applauds the move, highlighting the importance of accessibility and affordability in fostering connections.
The newly launched Territory Aviation Attraction Scheme played a pivotal role in making this development possible.
“This significant development for the people of Alice Springs was only made possible through our recently launched Territory Aviation Attraction Scheme, which strongly underpins the Government’s commitment to accessible and affordable air services,” said Joel Bowden.

Bonza’s Expanding Network
With the addition of the Melbourne to Alice Springs service, Bonza now operates on 11 routes from Victoria’s capital, setting itself apart with seven exclusive routes and nine devoid of any low-cost carrier competition.
Bonza’s current route map includes 3 bases and 38 routes to 21 destinations with a focus on the unserved and underserved markets
This latest expansion showcases Bonza’s continued commitment to providing diverse travel options for Australians.
Lorie Argus, Melbourne Airport CEO, acknowledges the positive impact of these direct flights. The increased accessibility is expected to draw more Victorians to the Northern Territory while making Melbourne’s attractions more reachable for a broader audience.
Argus emphasizes the benefits of healthy competition, anticipating a decrease in ticket prices due to Bonza’s extended capacity on this route.
