There are more than a few airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) systems based on currently or previously flying commercial aircraft. Such examples include the Boeing E-3 Sentry, based on the Boeing 707; the rare Boeing E-767, used by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF); the Beriev A-50, based on the Ilyushin Il-76; and the Boeing 737 AEW&C, developed from the 737 Next Generation (NG). Some regional aircraft, like the Embraer E145 and Saab 340, were also designed into AEW&C systems and designated as the Embraer R-99 and Saab Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft.
