CHICAGO- Passengers experienced a moment of distress when a United Airlines (UA) flight had to make an emergency landing on Thursday night in Kansas due to an engine issue.
The FAA released a statement explaining that United Airlines Flight UA551, originally bound for Denver International Airport in Colorado from Newark, New Jersey, was compelled to make the emergency landing at Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport in Kansas due to an engine problem.

Following the landing, which involved 199 people on board, airport officials reported that firefighters successfully extinguished a post-landing engine fire. Fortunately, there were no injuries.
Passenger Paul Widler, who was aboard the United Airlines flight, recounted witnessing flames outside his window. Disturbed by the sight, he began texting his loved ones, expressing concerns about the situation.
“We could see some of the flames coming out and the smoke,” shared Widler. “I don’t want to go out that way, but I thought it for sure and told the people I love, I love them.”
Widler noted that he sensed something was awry when a flight attendant instructed passengers to stay in their seats, mentioning that “the tone in their voice was a little freakish.”
Passengers Kamara and Keli Jager recalled sensing a jolt and hearing a rumbling noise, prompting an announcement that the flight would be diverting to Wichita.

The statement reads, “United Airlines flight 551 from EWR to DEN diverted to Wichita (ICT) due to a mechanical issue with the right engine.”
“The aircraft landed safely and was met by Airport emergency services. Passengers deplaned normally at the gate, and no injuries were reported.”
