GURGRAM- India’s largest carrier in terms of both passenger volume and fleet size, IndiGo Airlines (6E) is currently examining various possibilities to adjust its cabin configuration and implement other modifications in response to the escalating demand for air travel in India.
Insider information suggests to Business Today that the airline’s senior management is in talks about potential improvements, which may involve expanding the number of extra legroom (XL) seats.

IndiGo XL Seats
Presently, there are 18 designated seats distributed across rows 1, 12, and 13 within its aircraft. IndiGo’s fleet comprises approximately 334 aircraft, inclusive of the Airbus A320ceo & neo, A321neo, and ATR 72-600 models.
The seating capacity for the A320ceo is 180, the A320neo ranges from 180 to 186, the A321 fleet accommodates 222 to 232 passengers, and the ATR aircraft seats 78 individuals.
InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, recently finalized an agreement to acquire 500 aircraft from the Airbus A320 family. This strategic move aims to ensure a consistent flow of deliveries between 2030 and 2035. With this June order, IndiGo’s total number of Airbus aircraft ordered reaches 1,330, solidifying its position as the world’s largest purchaser of the A320 series.
“We intend to increase the number of XL seats,” stated the source, who also mentioned that an additional comfort being considered is the inclusion of specific meal plans for priority seats.

Awaiting Delivery of A321XLR
“The objective is to uphold our core values while enhancing the overall customer experience,” the source explained.
However, the introduction of hot meals is unlikely, as per the source.
Simultaneously, the airline is strategically looking towards global expansion, with plans to enter more international destinations.
In anticipation of this growth, IndiGo is eagerly awaiting the delivery of the Airbus A321XLR, specially designed for non-stop flights lasting up to 11 hours, potentially eliminating layovers between low-demand city pairs.
Despite these ambitious plans, the management is approaching the situation cautiously due to potential supply chain challenges. According to insider information, IndiGo is expected to have 70 aircraft grounded until March 2024.

Retaining A320ceo aircraft
“To further enhance our capacity, we have chosen to retain 14 of our older Airbus A320ceo aircraft, extend leases on 36 other planes, and secure leases for an additional 11 aircraft starting in November. Furthermore, we are set to lease an additional 12 A320 CEOs from the secondary market, commencing in January,” stated the airline.
During a press conference on Friday, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia remarked that the aircraft with Pratt & Whitney engines constitute the majority of grounded planes. He acknowledged the government’s awareness of the challenges faced by airlines due to grounded aircraft.
Nevertheless, he expressed optimism that the introduction of new aircraft through recent orders will help resolve the operational challenges.
