Why Did The Boeing 727 Have So Few UK-Based Operators?

Only three UK airlines used the type.

While the Boeing 727 was hugely popular in the United States and with several European airlines, it somehow never became popular in the United Kingdom. The reasons for this are primarily threefold. Perhaps most importantly, the British government wanted United Kingdom airlines to purchase the de Havilland DH.121, a British airliner produced by Hawker Siddeley. By the time the de Havilland DH.121 made its maiden flight on January 9th, 1962, de Havilland had been acquired by Hawker Siddeley, who renamed the plane the HS-121 Trident.
