SEATTLE- Initially revealed in early 2020, American Airlines (AA) planned a non-stop flight between Seattle (SEA) and Bengaluru (BLR) was anticipated to be the inaugural direct connection.
Initially revealed in early 2020, American Airlines’ planned non-stop flight between Seattle and Bengaluru was anticipated to be the inaugural direct link between the two cities. However, almost four years later, the commencement of this service, intended to cater to the travel needs of corporate passengers heading to Seattle and surrounding areas in the U.S., is indefinitely postponed.

Initially planned for commencement in October 2020, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic halted operations, allowing only flights under air bubble arrangements to operate on international routes.
Although the Ministry of Civil Aviation reopened international airspace on March 27, 2022, this particular route failed to take off due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent U.S. government ban on flying over Russian airspace.
American Airlines emphasized that the safety of its customers and team members is the airline’s foremost priority. Given that the Seattle-Bengaluru route necessitates flights to traverse airspace involved in a military conflict, the route remains inactive.
American Airlines has indefinitely delayed the launch of its scheduled service between Seattle and Bengaluru, India. An American Airlines spokesperson conveyed, “The safety of our customers and team members is America’s top priority. As this route requires flying through airspace currently involved in a military conflict, we postponed the flight out of an abundance of caution.”

According to a senior official from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), flights between the two cities are unlikely to commence soon, given the impracticality of U.S. carriers opting for a longer route by avoiding Russian airspace.
When initially announced in February 2020, American Airlines outlined plans to operate a 285-seater Boeing 787-9 aircraft on this route.
BIAL had anticipated that this new route would provide passengers with easier and faster access to destinations such as San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Denver, Arizona, Dallas, Chicago, West Coast, and East states through a one-stop flight compared to multiple stopovers in the past.
In 2021, Air India achieved a milestone by becoming the first airline to operate a non-stop flight between Bengaluru and the U.S. with the launch of its service to San Francisco.
