Jetstar Japan Resumes Tokyo Narita – Shanghai Flights

Jetstar Japan first launched its route between Tokyo Narita and Shanghai Pudong on June 2, 2017 (a day later in the other direction) with four weekly rotations. The flights, though, were terminated in February 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Almost four years later, on December 18, 2023, Jetstar Japan operated its first flight on the route post-resumption. The flight departed Tokyo Narita at 10:35PM and arrived at Shanghai Pudong Airport at 1:06AM the next day. The return flight departed Shanghai at 2:25AM and landed back at Narita Airport at 6:12AM.

Going forward, the flights will operate four times a week the following schedule which is not exactly the same but very similar to the schedule before the flights were paused:

GK35 / Tokyo Narita – Shanghai Pudong / 10:25PM – 1:20AM+1 / Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun GK36 / Shanghai Pudon – Tokyo Narita / 2:20AM – 6:20AM / Mon, Tue, Thu, Sat

The flights are operated using Jetstar Japan’s Airbus A320 aircraft. These seat 180 passengers in a 3-3 layout and feature a fairly limited seat pitch of 28 to 29 inches.

With the resumption of the Shanghai route, Jetstar Japan is back to operating three international destinations out of Tokyo Narita including Manila and Taipei and four international routes overall (those out of Narita and Nagoya Chubu – Manila).

The airline also operates an extensive network of Japanese domestic flights. It recently expanded it by launching a new Tokyo Narita – Asahikawa route.

Other Airlines Serving Shanghai Out of Tokyo

With Shanghai being China’s largest city and its financial hub, it should come as no surprise that there were already plenty of flights between Tokyo and Shanghai even before Jetstar Japan service’s resumption.

From Tokyo Narita, Shanghai Pudong is also served by another Japanese low-cost – Spring Japan. Full-service airlines operating on the route include Star Alliance members Air China and ANA and oneworld member China Eastern, all of which operate on the route multiple times a day. Juneyao Airlines and China Southern operate a rotation a day too.

Additionally, both Pudong and the more conveniently located Shanghai Hongqiao Airport are served from Tokyo Haneda Airport. ANA, JAL, China Eastern Airlines, and Shanghai Airlines offer service to both Pudong and Hongqiao. Juneyao Air, Peach, and Spring Airlines serve only the former.

Summary

After a nearly four-year hiatus caused by the pandemic, Jetstar Japan resumed its flights between Tokyo Narita and Shanghai Pudong on December 18, 2023. The flights are operated four times a week using the airline’s A320s.

With that, Jetstar Japan joined over half a dozen other airlines already serving the market with flights between Tokyo Narita and Shanghai Pudong, as well as Tokyo Haneda and both Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao.
