American Airlines Delays 787 Delivery

For 2024, American Airlines now plans to incorporate seven 787-9s instead of the previously intended 11, and for 2025, it aims to receive four B787-9s instead of the initially scheduled ten.

The airline stated, “We continually evaluate delivery schedules with our manufacturing partners and make adjustments as necessary based on our aircraft needs. Deliveries of our new 787-9 aircraft are still scheduled to begin in 2024. Still, we have adjusted the delivery schedule to better align with anticipated demand and our growth plans,” in response to inquiries from Cranky Flier.

American Airlines presently operates a fleet with 37 787-8s and 22 -9s from two orders.

The initial contract for the first twenty-8s and all delivered -9s was made in 2013. Subsequently 2018, the airline added seventeen more -8s (all of which have been received) and thirty yet-to-be-delivered -9s.

Airbus A321XLR Update

In addition, as reported by the View from the Wing blog, Senior Vice President of Network Planning Brian Znotins informed staff in an internal meeting that the first A321XLR from a firm order of fifty is expected for delivery in December 2024, with an additional fifteen scheduled for 2025.

According to the current plan, deliveries are set to conclude by the end of 2027, with most aircraft arriving in 2026.

American Airlines intends to deploy its A321XLR on trans-national routes, replace premium-configured A321-200s on select services, extend seasonal routes to year-round, and increase frequencies on some routes currently served by widebody aircraft.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, American’s existing A320neo Family fleet consists of seventy A321-200NX (with four more on order from Airbus) and five A321-200Ns acquired from Alaska Airlines (with five more expected).
