In a move toward enhancing its cargo capabilities, the Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) has secured an additional $19.4 million from Transport Canada through the National Trade Corridors Fund.

This funding injection aims to support the redevelopment of the cargo corner at the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport campus.

The redevelopment will see the construction of a state-of-the-art Multi-Tenant Air Cargo Logistics Facility.

Federal Commitment and Acknowledgement

On December 19, 2023, Minister of Northern Affairs Dan Vandal and Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre, Ben Carr, announced this substantial investment on behalf of Minister of Transport, Pablo Rodriguez.

The federal government had initially pledged $30 million for the project in 2019, underscoring its dedication to fostering growth and development in the region.

Nick Hays, president and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority, expressed his gratitude for Transport Canada’s continued support. Hays emphasized the shared commitment to enhancing communities, making them better places to live and work.

“We’re extremely grateful for Transport Canada’s continued support, as it highlights our shared commitment to making our communities an even better place to live and work,” said Nick Hays, president and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority.

Community Prosperity

Hays highlighted the far-reaching impact of this redevelopment, noting that although it occupies a relatively small piece of land, the benefits for the community’s prosperity will be immense.

By facilitating more efficient cargo connectivity, local companies will unlock new opportunities for growth, contributing to Manitoba’s economy.

Meeting Growing Demands

With the demand for cargo services on the rise, WAA is strategically investing in the necessary infrastructure to ensure the continued success of the community.

This initiative aims to position the Winnipeg James Richardson International Airport (YWG) as a critical cargo hub integral to Canada’s supply chain network.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

The centerpiece of this project is the state-of-the-art Multi-Tenant Air Cargo Logistics Facility, spanning 142,500 square feet.

This facility is designed to enhance efficiencies for freight partners by placing them in closer proximity to their planes, facilitating quick distribution and resupply of time-sensitive goods.

Noteworthy features include cold storage capabilities and flexible spaces tailored to operational needs.

Minister Vandal’s Insight

Minister Dan Vandal expressed his support, noting the investment’s impact on cargo handling at the airport:

“With today’s investment, we’re improving the Winnipeg James Richardson International Airport to handle more cargo.”

“This initiative will not only boost trade flows but also improve accessibility and affordability of goods in remote and Northern communities and help grow Manitoba’s economy.”

In addition to economic considerations, the redevelopment project emphasizes environmental sustainability.

The plan includes eco-friendly practices and a design that minimizes the airport’s environmental footprint.

Progress and Future Phases

Commencing in 2022, the redevelopment of the cargo corner saw extensive construction on the airfield and the demolition of the former Air Canada Cargo building.

The next phase, slated to begin in April, involves the construction of the Multi-Tenant Air Cargo Logistics Facility.
