Rex Group has again recorded the best On Time Performance (OTP) of any Australian airline group, according to the latest official Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) figures.

In November, Rex outperformed its rivals on reliability by what it describes as “a country mile”.

Comparing the three major Australian airline groups, Rex Group topped the list, achieving 74% for on-time flight departures, and 0.9% flight cancellations for scheduled services.

November Performance Overview

On-time performance (OTP) remains a key performance indicator for commercial airline operators. Passengers seek reliability, punctuality, and a hassle-free journey from takeoff to landing.

In aviation, an airline departure or arrival which is considered to be on time has an actual time of departure or arrival that occurs within 15 minutes of the scheduled time.

Qantas Group followed up, with 68% for on-time flight departures, and 3.1% flight cancellations.

Virgin Australia presented with 57% for on-time flight departures, and 6.2% flight cancellations for the month.

Rex’s Dominance Over the Financial Year

When we examine the data for the entire Financial Year, Rex has consistently held the top spot. This trend continued from the previous Financial Year, making Rex Group the leader in on-time performance.

Sydney Airport Showdown

For travelers frequenting the Sydney-Melbourne route, the difference in performance is stark. BITRE’s report reveals that Rex’s cancellation rate on this crucial route was a mere 0.75%.

In contrast, Virgin Australia’s cancellation rate skyrocketed to a staggering 12.5%, while Qantas followed closely at 8%.

Both larger carriers exhibited cancellation rates on this route that were twice their national average.

The Sydney Airport Slots Game

Rex Deputy Chairman, the Hon John Sharp AM, sheds light on what Rex consider to be a concerning practice by the two larger carriers at Sydney Airport.

He points out what he claims to be their blatant efforts to manipulate the slot system, scheduling flights they have no intention of operating merely to preserve historical precedence on the slots.

Rex Deputy Chairman, the Hon John Sharp AM, said in a statement late this week: “The deliberate disregard and neglect of the travelling public is truly unconscionable, especially at this peak holiday travel season.”

“It just goes to show that if you want to reach your destination with a minimum of fuss, have your flight depart on time and be able to pick up your luggage when you land the choice is obvious – fly Rex!”
