As 2023 comes to a close, major Indian carrier IndiGo has made history by becoming the first Indian airline to transport a staggering 100 million passengers in a single calendar year.

This remarkable accomplishment propels IndiGo into an exclusive global club of carriers operating on such a significant scale.

Notably, this achievement solidifies IndiGo’s position among the top 10 largest airlines globally by passenger traffic, marking its 17th anniversary with an extraordinary milestone.

A Testament to Speed and Efficiency

Celebrating its 17th year, IndiGo has not only achieved the historic 100 million passenger milestone but has also done so with exceptional speed, making it one of the fastest airlines to reach this figure.

In the calendar year 2022, IndiGo welcomed an impressive 78 million passengers on board, slightly surpassing pre-COVID-19 levels.

The new milestone represents a remarkable 22% increase in passenger traffic for the year 2023.

Setting Records

IndiGo’s pursuit of excellence extends beyond passenger numbers. The airline has recently attained another significant first for India by operating over 2,000 flights daily.

Currently operating to 118 destinations, including 32 international destinations, IndiGo stands as a testament to its commitment to connecting people and nations through air travel.

A Word from the CEO

Mr. Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, expressed his delight on this momentous occasion, stating, “We are incredibly delighted to achieve this historic milestone, welcoming aboard 100 million passengers in a year.”

“This landmark figure is the result of the love and trust shown by our customers and the hard work and passion of all IndiGo colleagues.”

In 2022, IndiGo strategically embarked on a growth plan under the pillars of ‘Reassure, Develop, and Create.’

This plan aims to support the airline’s ambitious goal of doubling in size and scale by the end of the decade.

To fuel this growth, IndiGo placed a groundbreaking order for 500 new aircraft with Airbus, in addition to the existing 450+ aircraft orders.

Reflecting on a Remarkable Year

Reaching the 100 million passenger milestone in a single year symbolizes the tremendous success that IndiGo and Indian aviation, in general, have achieved.

The government’s vision for India’s growth, with aviation as a catalyst, has not only benefited the nation but has also positively impacted the tourism and hospitality sector.

The Role of Aviation in India

In a geographically vast and culturally diverse country like India, aviation plays a pivotal role in bridging distances and bringing people closer.

Over the last six months, IndiGo has added more than 20 new international routes to its network while strengthening domestic connectivity.

Future Growth

Looking ahead to 2024, IndiGo plans to add exciting destinations such as Bali, Indonesia, and Medina, Saudi Arabia to its network.

The airline aims to achieve growth in a financially and environmentally sustainable manner, continuing to meet the mobility needs of its customers and contributing to the progress of India.
