Everyone who reads this knows I’m a Dodger fan…I am totally shocked over the money…plus the fact I went to bed congratulating my Blue Jay friends for the pickup. Everyone thought he was signing with them. ESPN got that info from a Dodgers site of all places because they posted the same article from http://www.dodgersnation.com. 10 years at 700 million….with a lot of it differed.

Not in a million years did I think Andrew Friedman (President of the Dodgers) would spend this much on a contract. I thought they would try to get him for like 3 years at 60 million a year or something short.

Friedman has only spent on one huge contract in the 10 years he has been there and that was Mookie Betts. That is the only contract he ever had over 200 million dollars. I did not see this coming whatsoever. I was told by Deke through Facebook and I thought he was kidding when he first messaged me. So to Deke and Dave my two Canadian friends…I’m shocked!

Do I think the Dodgers will regret this? Oh hell yes, I do. I hope it’s later rather than sooner though. Most of the money, from what I read, is deferred. That was Ohtani’s idea with no opt-outs. So now at least they will still get under the tax this year and reset their draft position.

Am I happy? Yes and ashamed really that they would pay that much but…it’s not my money and I can’t wait to see him play. What happens if he can’t pitch as well as he did? There are a lot of scenarios. When he gets injured…you lose two players, not one.

If they don’t get any more pitchers…they won’t go anywhere this year so the job is not done.

Anyway…the Dodgers owners are worth 300 billion so they won’t be hurting for money. I will admit…it’s nice to root for a team that will go out of their way to win. This year though…instead of getting retreads…they got an injured pitcher but a really good hitter all in one. We will find out in 2025 if he can still pitch.

Shohei Ohtani’s contract has significant deferrals that include most of his salary — an idea, a source said, that was Ohtani’s. In deferring the money, it reduces the cost of the competitive-balance-tax hit and will allow the Dodgers to build a better team around him.
