Both Shohei Ohtani and Tyler Glasnow share a common affinity for each other that has spanned a few years. Ohtani was a big reason why Glasnow ended up signing his extension with the Dodgers after Ohtani recruited him to join.
The two will be entering their first season with the Dodgers together in 2024, and they couldn’t be more excited. The Dodgers have one of the best teams in baseball on paper, and the offseason isn’t over yet.
In an interview with our very own Doug McKain, Glasnow spoke about his all-around amazement of Ohtani.
“The most impressive thing about him is just all the stuff he has to shoulder on and off the field. Like the extra media and everything like that. And he has every excuse to be like a d***. And I’ve heard from everyone that he’s a really awesome, level-headed, emotionally stable person.”
Per Tyler Glasnow via The Dodgers Nation YouTube ChannelPerhaps the praise of Ohtani shouldn’t be surprising. It helps explain why the Dodgers’ front office felt comfortable giving him a record-setting contract in the first place.
The Dodgers’ front office has at least paid lip service to the value of signing high-character guys over the years. If his new teammates live up to that reputation, Ohtani should fit in well. In any event, his skill set on the field has always left big-league stars in disbelief over what he can do.
“It’s incredible. Everyone knew the two-way guys like in Little League and what not, but no one’s really ever seen it in the big leagues. So he is just such a unicorn talent.”
Per Tyler Glasnow via The Dodgers Nation YouTube ChannelThe things Ohtani does on a baseball field are unlike anything we’ve seen before. Few are old enough to have seen Babe Ruth, and even he scarcely hit and pitched full-time simultaneously during his 22-year career.
In public, Ohtani comes across as a humble player who just wants to win baseball games. According to Glasnow, this is a genuine reflection of how he comes across in private.
“I think some guys at the All-Star Game on the team were saying he had to do like three times as much as everyone else, but he just had a smile on his face and he never really seems like he’s in a bad mood.”
