The Los Angeles Dodgers have made move after move this off-season. Sandwiched between the record-setting free agent contracts signed by Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, it’s easy to overlook the Dodgers’ commitment to veteran right-hander Tyler Glasnow.
Although he isn’t new to Major League Baseball, Glasnow is an insane talent whom the Dodgers’ front office prioritized over its other trade targets. Now, he’ll be a Dodger for the next five seasons.
In spite of his talent, injuries have played a factor in Glasnow’s inability to pitch 100 innings in all but two seasons of a career that began in 2016. His national profile has suffered as a result.
The 30-year-old wants all that to change. Glasnow told our very own Doug McKain in a recent interview that he wants to set career highs in innings pitched and games.
“I definitely want to set like an inning and games pitched thing… So, for sure, I want to get past that. I want to get a full season healthy.”
“The goal is obviously to win a World Series in the playoffs, but I think as long as I keep that start to start mentality and handle what I can handle that’s in front of me each week, it should work out.”
per Tyler Glasnow via Dodgers NationIn two of the last four seasons, Glasnow’s durability has not been a question. He was on pace to throw more than 160 innings during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He set a career high in innings at the major league level (120) in 2023.
Glasnow pitched a career-high 155.1 innings in 2017 between Triple-A and the majors in 2017. In 2018, Glasnow stayed healthy, but threw only 111.2 innings because Pittsburgh used him exclusively out of the bullpen. He moved to the starting rotation for good after being traded to Tampa Bay at midseason.
In 2023, Glasnow went 10-7 with a 3.53 ERA, recorded a career-high 162 strikeouts, a 118 ERA+, a 2.91 FIP, and a 1.08 WHIP in 120 innings pitched. Those numbers are impressive in any context. Add that he will be calling pitcher-friendly Dodger Stadium home with minimal workload restrictions, and Glasnow’s five-year contract extension might look like a steal in hindsight.
Glasnow wants to do great individually. The best way he can do that and help the Dodgers win is to stay healthy enough to pitch from March to October.
“Just stay healthy all season. And just get to that number… like 29 to 32, however many starts. Just get that full season of starts and just continue to stay obsessed in that routine and try to control everything I can control.”
