Trading for starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow of the Tampa Bay Rays, the Dodgers acquired one of the best starters in the league. When healthy, Glasnow has some of the best stuff on the mound, and L.A. is extremely excited to see what he can do for them.
Glasnow spoke with our very own Doug McKain for an interview, and he broke down the role he played in helping get himself to Los Angeles this offseason. The trade was contingent on the Glasnow and L.A. coming to terms on a contract extension, so he knew it was the one aspect of control he had.
“Being a unique situation being in a trade, I don’t really have much say in it. But I think, the only thing for me to control where I went was the extension. And, like I said, once he was a Dodger, I was like ‘Let’s do this thing, let’s sign it.’”
Per Tyler Glasnow via The Dodgers Nation YouTube ChannelThe Dodgers’ wanting to sign Glasnow long-term made him feel wanted, so he was determined to get a deal done. Coming back home to Southern California likely played a part in everything, but things worked out well for the right-hander.
“I could tell how much the Dodgers wanted me. And the trade package was good… So I think it was just a perfect fit.”
Per Tyler Glasnow via The Dodgers Nation YouTube ChannelNot only was Glasnow coming home, but he was being moved to a team with real World Series aspirations. Glasnow wants to win at the highest level, so being traded to a contending team gave him even more of a reason to get the extension done.
After L.A. signed two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, Glasnow was their next big target. Ohtani even helped recruit Glasnow to the Dodgers, even if it was just helping him sign on the dotted line for the extension.
McKain asked Glasnow how big of a role Ohtani played in helping push the process along. It seems Ohtani is as strong of a recruiter as he is a player.
“It was a big part of it, for sure. The opportunity to play with one of the best players in the last — maybe ever.”
Per Tyler Glasnow via The Dodgers Nation YouTube ChannelOhtani is the best player in the game today, so of course, other athletes will want to play alongside him. Just being able to learn from him is an opportunity that not everyone gets, so Glasnow jumped at the chance.
“It was obviously big just being my hometown team and going back home. But him signing there, definitely, I was considering some other teams, but once he signed I was like, alright, I want to go to the Dodgers.”
Per Tyler Glasnow via The Dodgers Nation YouTube ChannelThe Dodgers are glad that Glasnow agreed to the extension, and now he is with the club for the next few years. He gives them a front-line starting pitcher, who they can rely on in the big moments.
The front office deserves a lot of credit for putting these moves together and turning a weakness from last season into a strength. L.A. believes they have built a solid rotation that they feel good about entering the new year.
