The five most common myths about boudoir photography

Of all the photography genres, I think boudoir photography is the most misunderstood. Today, I’m debunking 5 common myths about boudoir photography.

Myth 1: Boudoir photography is pornography

This one right here makes me roll my eyes so hard it hurts. Boudoir is NOT porn. That’s bullshit. Boudoir photography is about the empowerment of the person being photographed. It’s about portraying their beauty and their strength and their vulnerability. Classical art portraiture isn’t considered pornographic and neither should boudoir photography.

Myth 2: You Need to Do It For Someone else

While boudoir photos make a great gift, boudoir sessions aren’t exclusively for the benefit of others. Boudoir photography is all about feeling confident in what you’re rocking. It’s about celebrating you and your body and your journey through life together. If you think your celebration of self is best when shared with someone else, then that’s fantastic. If you’re looking to do it for yourself, that’s the best! I’m so excited that you want to do a boudoir session, and I would LOVE to have you in my studio.

Myth 3: You need the “perfect” body

Ugh. More bullshit! If you have a body, it’s perfect for a boudoir shoot. Just like there is no “right” type of body, there’s no right type when it comes to boudoir, either. This is all about loving your one and only self. Whether you’re curvy, petite, super tall, super awkward, or anywhere in between, your body is perfect for a boudoir shoot. Have questions? I’m here to help, and I would love to talk to you about what to expect.

Myth 4: You Need Expensive Lingerie

Some of my favorite places to get lingerie from are questionably cheap, but totally legit. If you’re working with a budget, or just want a lot of affordable options, then check out Shein, Forever 21, Yandy, Amazon (ohmygosh, I get so many pieces from Amazon! The best part is that there are often thousands of reviews WITH PHOTOS so odds are, you can see it on a similar body type to yours.) Great deals are out there, you just have to find them!

AAAAND: You can shop your closet! Kimonos, crop tops, oversized cardigans, cute sweaters, boy shorts, swimsuits / bikini bottoms, graphic tees, leather jackets, jean jackets… there are tons of pieces you already own that can work wonderfully for a boudoir session!

Myth 5: You Have to Wear Lingerie

Honestly, you don’t even have to wear lingerie during your shoot. Your session is all about YOU. If you like sports bras or bralettes and comfy undies, then you do you.

Other ideas for boudoir photography are using a chunky knit blanket or a white sheet. You can also do a fine art nude style. Be as creative as you want! Maybe you have a gorgeous formal gown you’ve never gotten to wear. Instruments are so cool when clients incorporate them!
