Spice up your celebrations with these margarita recipes
Cinco de Mayo is a time to celebrate Mexican heritage and pride. What better way to celebrate than with a refreshing margarita? Margaritas are the quintessential cocktail of the holiday, and there are so many variations to choose from.
The origins of the margarita are somewhat disputed, but most stories agree that it was first created in Mexico. One popular theory is that it was invented in the late 1930s or early 1940s by a Tijuana bartender named Carlos “Danny” Herrera, who created the drink for a customer who couldn’t tolerate any hard liquor except tequila. Another theory suggests that the margarita was invented by socialite Margarita Sames in the late 1940s at her vacation home in Acapulco. Regardless of its exact origins, the margarita has become one of the most popular cocktails in the world, and is widely associated with Mexican culture and celebrations like Cinco de Mayo. Its popularity is due in part to its refreshing taste, versatility (it can be made in a variety of flavors), and the fact that it’s relatively easy to make.
