The folks at McMenamins are getting ready for spring with the release of two new beers--Sabretooth Hazy IPA and Pau Hana Gold: Island Lager. The brewery gave me samples of both. Since yesterday was a beautiful day in Portland that reached the low 70s, I opted for the lager. Here's the beer's description:

"When construction was complete on Kalama Harbor Lodge, an exuberant pau hana - 'work is finished' in Hawaiian - erupted from the brewery, and so we canned it. With fruity notes from lager yeast and noble hops, Pau Hana is crisp and refreshing, a daily celebration when your work is done."

Pau Hana was released last year, but this year's can features some beautiful new artwork.

The beer poured golden straw in color and left a sticky lacing on my glass. I didn't taste the fruity notes as described, but noticed light biscuit from the malt followed by spicy and herbal notes from the hops. It finishes clean and crisp.

As we head into warmer weather, Pau Hana Gold is a great candidate for a "lawnmower lager".  Since it weighs in at just 4.9% ABV, you could easily put down a few of these. Check out a McMenamins location near you.
