Christmas time can be hard for some. For example, sorry Detroit fans… For the Cleveland Cavaliers, they have a lot to be thankful for this holiday. Despite the injuries, the illnesses, they inconsistent play, the Cavs are right in the mix. And after going 3-1 this week, they are going into this holiday period with a festive feeling.
No Mitchell, no LeVert, no Mobley, no Garland, no Merrill, no problem. The Cavaliers played excellently against a surging Bulls team and won 109-95 on Saturday night. Max Strus made is presence known with 26 points and 7 assists. Craig Porter Jr also made a statement in a rare start with 19 points, 7 rebound and 8 assists. But above all, the man in the middle Jarrett Allen showed his dominance on both ends of the court with 19 points, 17 rebound and a career high 7 assists.
The Cavs capped of week #10 with a statement win against the Bulls, lets recap the good the bad and the ugly of the week.
The Good
Happy Homecomings: Former Cav Collin Sexton was welcomed home in Cleveland when the Jazz visited on Wednesday. The fans at Rocket Mortgage showed their appreciation for the current Jazz guard. Then, the next day, Larry Nance Jr, the son of Cavaliers legend of the same name, came to town with the Pelicans. Nance did not partake in the game as he is injured at the moment but he did participate in a fun Bally’s interview. After that, it was Max Strus’ turn to return to Chicago. The Hickory Hills, Illinois native played at Lewis University and DePaul for his collegiate career. The Bulls also signed Strus to a two-way contract his rookie year but unfortunately that ended in a ACL tear that sidelined him for the rest of that season. Fast forward 3 years and Strus is returning to Chicago with the Cavs showing them what could have been if he stayed in the Windy City.
The Bad
More guys missing time: You know the NBA regular season is a marathon, not a sprint. Also, a team’s health is not a guarantee. The Cavaliers are learning this lesson these last couple of weeks. This week the Cavs have been without Donovan Mitchell due to illness. Then after Sam Merrill has a career high points on Wednesday night, but ends up with a injured wrist and missed the game vs the Bulls. Needless to say, its been a next man up type of situation. And the Cavs have been responding, which is a great sign to see.
The Ugly
Cavs getting no love on Primetime: Its the time of year of the big Christmas time matchups. I’m not sure exactly what the Cavs would have to do to get more love on Primetime. They won 51 games last season and they have a marquee star in Donovan Mitchell. Up to now, they have had two games on TNT and some games on NBA TV. Other than that, not much love for Cleveland. One hopes that getting into the playoffs again, and winning a playoff series or two will get the TV schedule makers to put the Cavs on National TV more. Until then, the Cavs will just have to show the NBA they deserve to be on National TV whenever they get the chance.
