New Yorkers had to wait a relatively long time to be able to place online sports wagers within the boundaries of the state, but the coast was finally clear in January 2022, when mobile betting became officially legal in The Big Apple.
New York became the 18th US state to legalize mobile sports betting in the US after the Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on sports betting in May 2018.
Neighbours New Jersey were the first to act after that landmark ruling by the Court, passing the bill in June 2018, with New York eventually joining the mobile sports betting train just over three and a half years later.
As of the time of writing, there are nine legal sportsbooks in New York, offering a wide range of betting services to residents in the state.
New York sportsbooks generally have great betting markets, covering traditional American sports as well as more global competitions. Another common theme with betting sites in the state is the plethora of promotions for both new sign-ups and existing customers.
Residents in the Empire State have the luxury of choosing from a wide range of New York betting bonuses to augment their betting finances and complement the overall experience.
Here are the nine legal sportsbooks in New York and what you stand to enjoy by signing up on each of them.
1) FanDuel
Arguably the most respected and trusted sports betting brand across the USA, FanDuel are amongst the pioneer mobile betting brands in New York, going live on January 8, 2022.
It’s hard to pick a fault with FanDuel, not least the mobile app, which is one of the most intuitive and user-friendly betting apps available to New York bettors.
FanDuel has a super comprehensive sportsbook, offering markets in popular American sports like the MLB and the NFL, as well as non-US competitions like the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.
The new customer bonus is very valuable, as you’d expect with a top sportsbook.
2) DraftKings
Like FanDuel, DraftKings is one of the superpowers of sports betting in the United States. They also launched in the Empire State on the same day mobile wagering went live in the state.
DraftKings had already made their name in the US with their Daily Fantasy Sports offering, and their sports betting arm has simply picked up the baton and taken it to another level.
The sports betting markets on DraftKings include America’s Big 4- MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL- as well as tennis, football, golf, motorsports, and many more. It is one of the most complete sportsbooks available to New York players.
DraftKings is also rich in betting features and bonuses, offering referral bonuses, odds boost, parlay options, and of course, the brilliant DraftKings Dynasty Rewards.
3) Caesars
Photo: YogonetBringing together the appeal of Caesars Entertainment and the sports betting competence of William Hill, the Caesars Sportsbook indeed brings out the fun part in sports betting.
The aim for many bettors remains to win their bets, but there is so much more happening on the side to ensure that there is no dull moment on Caesars.
The foundation is firmly set with the huge $1,250 new customer offer, which also includes Tier Credits and Rewards. At the same time, the remainder of the Caesars journey takes bettors through a complete sportsbook, great existing customer bonuses and features, and a whole lot more.
Caesars went live in New York on January 8, 2022, and haven’t looked back since then.
4) BetMGM
BetMGM has been somewhat overshadowed by FanDuel, DraftKings, and Caesars, but they are very much part of the USA’s Big 4 betting brands.
Like Caesars, they also bring a big touch of entertainment to the betting experience with the BetMGM Rewards program, offering VIP hotel stays and appearances, amongst many other benefits.
Needless to say that the sportsbook is top class, well garnished with top bonuses and features.
BetMGM officially launched their mobile betting services in New York on January 17, 2022, just over a week after online wagering was legalized in the state.
5) BetRivers
Betrivers do not quite command the clout of FanDuel or DraftKings, or any other member of the Big 4, but they are arguably the best of the rest.
They were one of four brands to launch on opening day in New York (the other three being FanDuel, DraftKings, and Caesars), and they have been very steady in the state ever since.
The BetRivers New York sports markets compete favorably with any other brand in the state, while they are the best sportsbook for parlay insurance promos.
Betrivers also have a Rewards program called the iRush Rewards, which affords New Yorkers the chance to rise up loyalty levels and redeem great rewards along the way.
6) Pointsbet
Pointsbet became the sixth operator to launch their mobile betting services in New York when they went live in the state on January 24, 2023.
Many weren’t sure of what to expect from the Australian-born bookie, but they have done really well and have arguably been punching above their weight.
With a very affordable new customer bonus and innovative features like pointsbetting, Pointsbet have carved out a space for themselves in the US and have definitely made its presence felt in New York.
They are far from the level of top dogs like FanDuel and DraftKings, but they have won over their fair share of fans in the Empire State.
7) WynnBet
If you are a fan of the multi-sport parlay bonus, then you’ll really love WynnBet New York.
They’ve also got a loyalty program called Wynn Rewards, which rewards consistent customers with prizes ranging from bet credits to nightclub access and complimentary hotel stays.
They aren’t the biggest on promotions, but the two mentioned above certainly stand out.
WynnBet mobile launched in New York in February 2022, and while its growth has not been spectacular, they have become an established and identifiable brand in the state.
8) BallyBet
Ballybet were amongst the nine operators given NY licenses ahead of the go-live date of January 8, 2022, but they didn’t kick off in the state until six months later, launching their app in the Big Apple on July 13, 2022.
It’s been fairly slow-going for the brand amidst stern competition from more established operators and the biting tax rate in New York.
The bonuses on Ballybet New York are not the greatest, but they do have a quality sportsbook featuring a nice variety of options. A strong selling point for Ballybet are the competitive odds, giving the sportsbook an edge over some of the bigger operators.
9) Resorts World Bet
Operated by the Resorts World New York City land-casino, the Resorts World Bet app went live in New York in March 2022.
It’s probably the least popular betting app in the state, but it does carry a decent sportsbook with most of New York’s favorite sports.
And when you add features like parlay boosters, live streaming, and odds boosts to the mix, you’ve got a very useful app in your hands.
The Resorts World Bet app also scores very highly in aesthetics, with its uniquely simple design creating a great betting ambiance for users.
For now, these are the nine legal online sportsbooks in New York. Being the fourth largest state in the US, the Empire State presents big opportunities for betting operators, but that is countered by the very high betting tax rates in the state.
It will be interesting to see if and when more operators make their way to the Big Apple.
