Owen Mcmahon nap of the day

Of the 700+ horses - from 77 races across 11 meetings - running on Boxing Day, the one I've selected as my NAP of the Day goes in the opener at Aintree.

NAP of the Day

11:55 Aintree - Cherie D'Am @ 9/4

I suppose it goes without saying given she's the pick from a plethora of options, but I think Dan Skelton's Cherie D'Am represents excellent value for the mares' handicap hurdle over 2m4f that opens the card at Aintree on Boxing Day.

For me, current market leader Realisation is underpriced on her win at Southwell just nine days ago.

Sure, it was an authoritative success and she escapes a penalty so races off the same mark of 103, but there's a few reasons to take her on.

This is a quick turnaround for a mare having her fourth run in under two months, especially as she's upped in class and back on soft ground which she's failed to cope with in the past.

Regular jockey Lilly Pinchin also can't claim any weight this time, so she's effectively up three pounds despite that unchanged rating.

Most importantly, I think she meets a very well-handicapped horse in Cherie D'Am.

The five-year-old daughter of Great Pretender won her PTP in November last year by a whopping 20 lengths, before a similarly striking performance on her rules debut in a bumper at Uttoxeter, which she won by 8L, back in April.

Her first go over hurdles told a similar story, as she bolted up by five lengths, leaving 17 rivals in her wake.

She then went to Warwick late last month and found one too good - Nigel Twiston-Davies' 132-rated gelding Push The Button, who was only giving one pound to Skelton's mare.

That's an extremely strong piece of form in the context of this race. The third-placed Yes Day, who was over a length behind the selection, ran respectably in the G2 Albert Bartlett Trial at Cheltenham the other week and even Big Fish, who was fourth at Warwick, won a maiden hurdle prior by five lengths.

I think an opening mark of 115 is very, very lenient for Cherie D'Am, who's proven in these conditions and shapes like she'll appreciate this slightly sharper trip.

Fingers crossed her current price proves a bit of a gift come midday on Tuesday.
