World Darts Championship Day 10 Betting Tips: Clemens can send Chizzy packing
Thirty-two players have headed back to Alexandra Palace after the Christmas break as the action reconvenes at the PDC World Darts Championship with six third-round ties on Day 10.
Three-time champion Michael van Gerwen is among the star turns and his all-Dutch game also features in our acca.
World Darts Championship Day 10 Tips
Scott Williams (vs Martin Schindler) @ 6/4 Gabriel Clemens (vs Dave Chisnall) @ 11/8 Richard Veenstra +2.5 (vs Michael Van Gerwen) @ 6/5Scott Williams (vs Martin Schindler) @ 6/4
Day 10 kicks off with an Anglo-German set-to between Scott Williams and No.26 seed Martin Schindler - and the Englishman gets the nod.
It's been noted that dark horse Shaggy hasn't played quite as well in 2023 as he did in 2022 but he's headed to the Palace all guns blazing, taking care of Haruki Muramatsu and then brushing aside seventh seed Danny Noppert 3-0.
Williams averaged 94 against Noppert and gave the impression there was more in the tank ahead of his clash with Schindler.
The German No.2 averaged almost 97 in an impressive dismantling of Jermaine Wattimena, in which Schindler's 52 per-cent finishing success was too hot for the Dutchman to handle.
Williams, who beat Schindler in their one meeting in 2023 in a Players Championship match, is a step up in class from the inconsistent Wattimena and should be trusted to reach the last 16 for the first time.
Gabriel Clemens (vs Dave Chisnall) @ 11/8
If game one of the afternoon provides a minor upset, then so too can game two with another England-Germany spat this time going the way of the away team.
Gabriel Clemens, Germany's No.1 and seeded 22, takes on Dave Chisnall, England's No.5 and seeded 11, and it's the underdog who warrants the interest.
Chizzy threw poorly in his opener against Cameron Menzies and a more efficient, clinical opponent would have sent the man in yellow packing. Menzies wasn't that player; Clemens, a semi-finalist 12 months ago, very definitely can be.
Chisnall struggled with the heat on the stage and indeed this is a venue where he's rarely seen at his best. In 12 previous visits the Englishman has only gone beyond round three on three occasions and his one run to the semis was when there wasn't a crowd at the Palace.
Clemens saw off popular Hong Kong arrowsmith Man Lok Leung 3-1 in his opener, silencing a crowd who weren't exactly willing him on, which was a decent dress rehearsal for Wednesday's work-out.
Richard Veenstra +2.5 (vs Michael Van Gerwen) @ 6/5
"I may take a set off him," said Richard Veenstra, with classy under-statement, when asked if he could beat MvG in their all-Dutch ding-dong.
Veenstra may just be able to do better than that and is well worth a handicap punt. Remember, we're in best-of-seven sets territory now so Flyers covering a 2.5 spread means he can lose 4-2 and we're quids in.
And Veenstra is eminently capable of doing that. He looked as good as anyone in round two, chucking in a 99.5 average in a 3-0 demolition of Kim Huybrechts in which he didn't even cough up so much as a single leg.
Clearly he's not going to find van Gerwen such a pushover, the Green Machine having also flexed his muscles impressively in his opener, dropping only two legs in a whitewash of Keane Barry.
Van Gerwen's playing well though let's not pretend he's at the peak of his powers, because he patently isn't. Veenstra is decent and competitive and can give his countryman a run.
