This week, we are excited to kick off Global Goals Week, an annual event that brings attention to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. At Sunnyside Bed & Breakfast, we are proud to be part of this global movement dedicated to action, awareness, and accountability. Today, we’d like to shed light on one crucial aspect of sustainability that is close to our hearts: food.

Food production plays a significant role in the fight against climate change, contributing to a third of our global carbon emissions. To address this issue, one effective strategy is to prioritize local suppliers and reduce food transportation distances, often referred to as “food miles.” This approach not only helps reduce emissions but also ensures that we enjoy the freshest and highest-quality produce, often sourced directly from nearby farms.

At Sunnyside, we take immense pride in our commitment to using locally sourced food whenever possible. Our goal is to raise awareness about the exceptional quality of farms and suppliers right here in the North West. In fact, we’re so passionate about it that we’ve even recreated the Global Goals logo using ingredients sourced locally.

Let’s take a closer look at some of our fantastic local partners:

1. Flavourfresh: Just six miles from Sunnyside, Flavourfresh is our go-to source for strawberries, tomatoes, blackberries, and raspberries. We also use their exceptional produce to create delicious strawberry and blackberry jams.

2. Kellen’s Butchers: Our succulent sausages are provided by Ken at Kellen’s Butchers, who source their pork from Lancashire farms.

3. Bates Dairy: Fresh milk from Bates Dairy is used at breakfast, in our guests fridges and to create our own yogurt, ensuring a creamy and delightful breakfast for our guests.

4. Langs Farmgate Eggs: Located just down the road in Ormskirk, Langs Farmgate Eggs supply us with fresh eggs that are perfect for a hearty morning meal.

5. Nelstrops of Stockport: We use flour from Nelstrops of Stockport in our culinary creations, such as our delectable cupcakes.

But our commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop there. We take things a step further by growing parsley, chives, and mint right here on our premises. These fresh herbs add a burst of flavor to our dishes and are grown with love.

Additionally, we’re excited about the prospect of offering our guests honey from our very own hive in the near future. Our industrious bees are working hard, and we’re hopeful that they will make it through the winter successfully. This delicious addition to our breakfast offerings will be a sweet testament to our dedication to sustainability.

As we celebrate Global Goals Week, we invite you to join us in supporting sustainability efforts. By choosing Sunnyside B&B, you’re not only enjoying a relaxing stay but also contributing to a greener, more sustainable world. Together, we can make a difference, one locally sourced meal at a time. Thank you for being a part of our commitment to a better future.
