Lake Superior is coming alive after a long winter. There are just a few traces of ice on the lake, sail boats and fishing boats are being readied for the season, and companies offering incredible adventures on the Big Lake are getting ready to serve the many visitors to the Apostle Islands and the Bayfield WI area. Here are some of the best ways to enjoy Lake Superior starting in May, before the height of the season and the crowds:
Kayak Lake Superior to explore some of the incredible Apostle Islands sea caves. Lost Creek Adventures in Cornucopia, WI (very close to Meyers Beach, the launch point for most kayaking adventures to the sea caves) offers both half and full day kayaking tours to the sea caves, as well as stand-up paddle board tours and shipwreck snorkeling tours. The half-day kayaking tour to the sea caves begins May 15, what a great way to kick off the season. Take a cruise on Lake Superior and experience the beauty of the Apostle Islands and Lake Superior with Apostle Islands Cruises. The Grand Tour (the most popular tour) begins May 18. Be one of the first of the season to get out on the Big Lake and tour the Apostle Islands. The Apostle Islands Cruises offers a variety of tours, including lighthouse and shipwreck cruises. Take the Ferry from Bayfield to Madeline Island and experience Big Bay Town Park, located 7 miles from the ferry terminal on the island. One of our favorite things to do on Madeline Island is to spend the day at Big Bay Town Park. Start off canoeing Big Bay Lagoon, which is protected from Lake Superior, located in the town park, and take in the sights and sounds of the water and nature all around you. Canoes are available as early as mid-April for rental adjacent to the lagoon and rental is on the honor system. Afterwards, take a walk on the beautiful sandy beach of Big Bay Town Park, dip a toe or take a dip in the crystal clear water of Lake Superior, then relax on the beach and listen and watch the waves roll in and out. Life doesn’t get much better than that! Experience sailing on Lake Superior with Dreamcatchers Sailing. The most popular trip is the Afternoon Sail, a 2.25 hours sail of the bay area. On the trip, you can participate in sailing the boat or sit back and relax, the choice is up to you. Trips begin May 10. What a great way to get out on the Lake this Spring and enjoy an afternoon on the water.Stay at Pinehurst Inn Bed & Breakfast, TripAdvisor’s no. 1 rated bed & breakfast in Bayfield, for your Apostle Islands getaway to enjoy the Lake Superior attractions and experiences.
