One of the most popular tourist attractions is the traditional Door County Fish Boil offered by local restaurants. Fish Boils were introduced by Scandinavian immigrants in the late 1800s to feed large crowds of fishermen and lumberjacks.
Today, whitefish caught by local fisherman in Lake Michigan is cooked in a large cast-iron kettle with potatoes, onions and salt. After the fish is cooked, the oil rises to the top of the kettle. Kerosene is then placed on the flames causing the boil over. The meal is completed with butter and lemon, a serving of coleslaw and a dessert of Door County cherry pie.
Most restaurants encourage guests to arrive a half-hour early to witness the boil over which is quite a site to see with large flames created when kerosene is thrown onto the fire. Because of their popularity, reservations are always recommended. Bring your appetite and enjoy this unique Door County experience!
