Every year, on the last Tuesday of April – affectionately known as “Tony’s Tuesday” – Broadway is abuzz at 8:30am, an admittedly unusual hour of the day for most working on the “Main Stem”. And this year was no different as Tony Award winners Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) announced the nominees for the 77th Annual Tony Awards. With 21 musicals and 16 plays opening throughout the 2023-2024 season (the most in recent memory), HELL’S KITCHEN and STEREOPHONIC led the way with 13 Tony Award nominations each, including Best Musical and Best Play, respectively. The buzzy new musical THE OUTSIDERS garnered 12 nominations, including Best Musical. West-End transfer CABARET at the Kit Kat Club followed closely with 9 nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical. Competing for Best Revival of a Musical is the starry MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG which secured 7 nods. Musicals making their Broadway debut this season had an excellent showing including WATER FOR ELEPHANTS (7 nominations, including Best Musical), SUFFS (6 nominations, including Best Musical), ILLINOISE (4 nominations, including Best Musical), LEMPICKA and THE NOTEBOOK (each with 3 nominations), BACK TO THE FUTURE (2 nominations), and THE GREAT GATSBY (1 nomination.) Returning to broadway this season, the revival of THE WHO’S TOMMY also received 1 nomination. Looking at currently running Broadway plays, APPROPRIATE received 8 nominations, AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE received 5, MARY JANE and MOTHER PLAY each received 4, and the starry revival of UNCLE VANYA received 1.
