Waxing In Winter

It seems the summer months are finally over, as we begin to prepare for the beginning of Winter,
we look forward to those warm jumpers and scarves and getting ready for the new season.

Regulars to this blog will have read our Shaving versus Waxing post which has converted so many guests to the joys of waxing.
They have since ditched the razor and are seeing that instead of shaving daily, they only need to wax monthly!

Now as the new season approaches, we have had numerous guests asking if they still need to be waxing in the winter as their bodies will be covered up.

So that’s the reason for this new blog – Do I need to be waxing in winter?

The Hair Growth Cycles

Before we go into the major benefits, let’s look first at the way your hair grows and the cycles of hair growth.
Please bear with us, it’s about to get interesting.

The 3 stages of hair growth are anagen, categen and telogen.

Anagen is the active growing phase of hair.
Catagen is the end of the active growth of a hair. The lower part of the hair is cut off from its blood supply and from the cells that produce new hair. This is when a club hair starts to be formed.
Telogen is the resting phase and is when the club hair is completely formed.

What is a club hair?

Club hairs are an end product of the final hair growth and have a white bulb of keratin at the root tip of the strand.
This bulb keeps the hair in the follicle until it sheds and the hair growth cycle starts over.
As hair follicles produce new strands of hair, these new strands slowly replace and push out the club hairs.

The old hair falls out in preparation for the development of anagen hair and the cycle continues.

Waxing in winter is the best time to wax

The best time to wax is during the anagen stage.
This is because when anagen hair is removed, the waxed area remains hair-free for longer.
This is, of course, due to the fact the hair was removed at its earliest stage of its development.

Here’s the great thing, when you wax anagen hair, you will eventually see a reduction in hair regrowth.
If the hair is repeatedly removed from the full depth of the follicle,
the structures that surround the hair follicle will eventually weaken.

When is the worst time to wax?

The worst time to wax, however, is during the telogen stage.
This is because the brand new anagen hair may have already begun developing below the surface hair.
These anagen hairs won’t be picked up by your wax which means the results of your waxing won’t last as long.
Even though all of the old hair was removed, the new hairs (anagen hair) could start to break through soon after your treatment.

To get the best result, you need a regular routine to try and catch the hair in the anagen phase.

Waxing in Winter For Longer Lasting Results

Winter is the best time to get longer lasting results from waxing for next summer.

When you are waxing you want to get all the hairs, so you want to wax during the first phase of your hair growth cycle
rather than the final phase where new hair may be developing underneath.

This can be difficult to achieve during the summer months especially when all you want is every single hair gone so that you can have super smooth legs all day, every day.

Your wax routine should be monthly as this will also allow your hair to come through at the same time so you don’t have any new hairs pushing through a few days later.

It is winter and I won’t have my legs out?

Winter means the festive season will be here soon and so will be those parties and events.
That little black dress will make a regular appearance.

You could, go for the quick fix and reach for the razor however this will ruin all the effects of why you started waxing in the first place.
You will have to start the process all over again when summer arrives.

The thought of those razor bumps though!
The cuts and knicks and then there’s the razors and creams to buy….

You and Your Waxing Lifestyle

So you started your wax lifestyle and it hurt a bit, but the pain reduced after each wax, which means the more you wax, the less painful it becomes.
So if you stop waxing throughout winter you will have to endure that pain and discomfort all over again.
When we say pain, we use Perron Rigot, a wax that is practically pain-free. Read why is waxing so popular at Queen B?

Of course if it’s your first wax, we won’t lie, there will be some discomfort but the more you wax, the easier it will be. Read how to prepare for your first wax.

Once you get into a routine, you won’t have to spend every few days shaving and you will have baby smooth skin for long periods of time too! Still not sure if waxing is for you? Afraid to wax?
