There are certain moments in life that require special attention, such as your Wedding Day, so why would you do your own makeup? Photographs will be there to remind you of the could have-beens, such as in the case of Pippa Middleton’s makeup.

The press focused on the “lovely” understated makeup Pippa so frugally applied herself, comparing it to her usual heavy black eyeliner, excessive self-tanning, and anything else that would pull the reader away from noticing how underwhelming the makeup on the sister of the Duchess of Cambridge actually was for the wedding of the year!

"The bridal industry money machine wants to sell you the latest “trending” fantasies, but remember, they will desperately reach for ways to have comfortable profit margins at your expense. Let’s get real here, make this about you and don’t lose your head.

It is fortunate Pippa has natural beauty on her side, if it wasn’t for the wedding dress and accessories, her bridal makeup was just another day at the office. In other words, not everyone can pull this off, so, although it somewhat worked for her, it won’t work for everyone.

Not everyone has a wedding budget that allows room for all the little luxuries. We are not opposed to DIY bridal makeup, but if you are going to spend endless amounts of your hard-earned cash, some harder than others, on the wedding of your dreams you want to make certain all eyes are on the bride without avoidable distractions!

Shouldn’t your guest be admiring the sparkle of love in your eyes and how stunning you look? Your wedding photographer will appreciate it as well. Poor makeup application can really affect the outcome of your wedding photos.

Don’t Sell Yourself Short

When you add up all the expenses involved in producing your dream wedding, cutting out the wedding hair and makeup artist hardly addresses any savings. Your hair and makeup artist is vital! You are the focal point; the bride always is.

After hiring a wedding planner, the venue, the wedding dress, the bridesmaid dresses, flowers, the wedding band, the caterer, the photographer/videographer, the wedding gifts, the honeymoon, the wedding invitations and all other expenses that pour into a wedding, why wouldn’t you treat yourself to a bridal beauty guru?

Personally, if it was my wedding, I would cut out the wedding planner and do it all with the help of family and friends. Wedding planners can be costly. You would be surprised how much those close to you are willing to help.

The Biggest Bridal Makeup Mistakes The Pros Know How to Prevent

The most common mistake brides make is wearing too much makeup! Keep completely away from strobe sticks, heavy contouring or baking, unless you want to look as unnatural as a mannequin on your wedding day. It is unflattering and a trend that should be eternally forgotten unless you are dressing in drag, which in that case, is all the rage. I am certain these products and techniques were designed with good intentions but have been abused beyond human recognition.

When looking back at your wedding photos you want to admire how beautiful and happy you looked, rather than, wishing you had hired a professional hair and makeup artist. Always avoid social media, fashion and celebrity trends of the moment, they can lead to embarrassing and dated wedding photos you can never take back.

The second biggest mistake is underdone makeup, as in the case of Pippa Middleton’s wedding makeup. It just wasn’t special. This may sound like a contradiction, but in some cases, you can look really washed out or older in your photographs because the makeup didn’t suit the lighting.

Self-care routines are important for a radiant complexion

Be aware that diet, lifestyle and skin care routines, or lack of them affect the outcome of your wedding day photographs. If you have not exfoliated in years, have a terrible sleep routine, a detrimental diet that consists of not enough consumption of water, your skin will tell the story.

No use in spending thousands of pounds for a beautiful wedding gown and venue only to neglect oneself. Self-care is essential for a radiant glow. It is best to begin healthy routines as far in advance as possible with the minimum being 6 weeks – which is the time it usually takes for treatments and positive changes in your diet to make a noticeable difference.

The Benefits of using a Wedding Hair and Makeup Artist

There are many crucial factors to consider when having your wedding day hair and makeup done: a theme, the longevity of your hair and makeup, the ability to wear in summer heat, humidity, wind, dry conditions, tears, skin types, lighting, location and more.

Makeup artists know which products to avoid. For example, they understand that foundations with SPF have active ingredients such as, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which scatter light particles and create flashback when flash photography is used giving brides a whitish glow in their wedding photos. Also, setting powders with silica that are meant to blur the pores and imperfections can create white streaks in flash photography.

London hair and makeup artist Carlos Palma explains the benefits of using professionals for your special day:

Along with the ability to create a beautiful look and hairstyle that will last all day and into the night, we have the knowledge and experience to know what works with your hair texture, skin type, colouring, wedding dress, and the venue. If you are at a loss as to what look you wish to go for we can advise you confidently.

Ask for a consultation before the trial run which I do for free. This is not always the case so make sure to do your homework first. We will advise you on the type of makeup suited for the time of day you will be getting married and the setting (day, evening, indoor, outdoor, flash photography, natural light). Professionals can guide you on the products that suit your age and skin type without the pressure you experience at a sales counter. We too are getting paid, but the quality of our work and expertise means everything in an industry based on word of mouth referrals and the overall outcome of something so personal. We really do have to be honest! The makeup artist is working for you, not a big corporation selling you a minefield of products which may or may not work. There is no time for that. I normally recommend the timing of the trial run to be done about 6 weeks to 2 months before the wedding. The reason for this is that you remain fresh on the makeup artists mind. You can always meet with your makeup artist prior to the trial run for an evaluation of your hair and skin and iron out any recommendations for the practice run. It gives the makeup artist a bit of time to prepare what they need to work with. For example, if you want an up-do and your hair is too thin, you may need extensions put in.

There are many things to consider on this special day, but what you don’t want is to neglect yourself.
