Photo preview of a cozy potion brewing board game.
Potions of Azerland is the first board game from designer Grayden Baker and Warped Reality Games. Players will collect resources and brew potions to fulfill visitors’ orders, hoping to become the next Potions Master. Its medium to light strategy and lovely illustrations from Andrew Bosley land Potions of Azerland solidly in the cozy board game genre. Discover more about the gameplay through the photos below. Keep in mind that these components are prototype and do not fully reflect the final product.
As with many board games, the most points wins. Players will gain the bulk of their points during the game by spending potions to take visitors from the town.
To accomplish this, players will need to make use of five main actions: Forage, Study, Market, Brew, and Fulfill. In each of the 6 rounds, players will insert numbered tiles into their action board to set their priority for each action. Actions carry out in the order printed on the board, but a player who selected 1 will take that action first before other players. With ties resolved by the cauldron tokens.
Forage, Study, and Brew actions will be stronger for those resolving them first. In a 4 player game, the first to resolve an action gains 4, then 3, 3, and 2. If an action isn’t useful, tokens can be inserted upside down to gain coins instead of taking the action that round.
In the Forage action, you will roll dice and gain the resource tokens matching the result.
Study will advance your knowledge of each potion type along the track. As you increase your knowledge, your potions can level up in strength to intermediate or expert, improving the reward for consuming that potion.
Before players reveal their action priorities at the start of the round, they can consume some of their potions to gain the rewards for that potion type. The first time you consume a novice level potion of each type, you unlock the ongoing abilities listed on your player board. These can be key to victory.
Resources can also be purchased from the market. Players can spend as many coins as they have to acquire resources available here. The cards available are first come, first serve.
Then players can brew a number of potions based on their priority. The resources required for each potion is listed on the player boards.
Lastly, Visitors are acquired by fulfilling their order, ranging from 1 to 3 potions. This earns that player points, as well as instant or once per round effects, or end game scoring conditions.
Points can also be earned by taking the action specified on the bonus tiles revealed at the beginning of rounds 2 to 6. The visitors above the round board are on the road and will become available in town at the start of the next round.
