Boardgames for One

Howdy gamers new and old! I’m Mike, your board gaming everydude. Stick with me to find the best single player games for you, as well as the occasional mashup.

I don’t play two player games often, but when I do, it’s to spend quality time with my buddies.

Fortify is a real-time two player game where you and your best friend throw water balloons (dice) at each other while trying to build up cardboard box (cards) forts to defend your base. The winner is the first person to land three hits on their opponents base.

Every round starts with each player drawing fort cards. They then race to use those cards to strategically build up their forts. Whoever lays all their cards down first can grab the Cousin token—a crucial advantage in the water balloon throwing phase. Warning, as you race to be strategic and fast you may or not end up diving across the table to beat your buddy to that Cousin token.

Next you get to add any box kids (they help you gain more fort cards in the next round) and/or water balloon kids (they give you more water balloon dice to throw during the water balloon phase) that you can legally place inside your fort.

Finally we come to the water balloon throwing phase. You get one water balloon dice for your base and then an additional for each water balloon throwing kid in your base (max of 4). Whoever grabbed the Cousin token gets to add an additional Cousin Die to their roll, giving them an offensive or defensive advantage.

Then the chaos ensues. You roll your dice simultaneously, and race to place water balloons on your opponents base and fort, or place rolled umbrellas to defend your own base and fort. After you place one die, you may reroll all remaining if you choose. However! Don’t move to slow. The first to place all water balloon dice gets to grab the Jerk Token. You can also forfeit and grab the Jerk token at any point, but you lose any unplaced dice.

If you win the jerk token, you get the Jerk die, allowing one more roll after all water balloons are placed.

MY EXPERIENCE

This game is strategic, but at it’s heart it’s a bonding experience with your best friend. Challenge each other’s speed and intellect with fort placement and dice placement, but the real fun is the race for those tokens. We almost landed on the floor while knocking each others arms out of the way racing for that Cousin Token. I think that’s how this game is supposed to go. Use real strategy, but even more, enjoy your time with your friend—all while destroying their hopes and dreams of building the ultimate box fort with your onslaught of water balloons.
