Monopoly Free Parking – Is it a Monopoly Car or Electric Company Plug?
The Monopoly Free Parking icon is a famous graphic art piece that was used in the original Monopoly game by Parker Bros. Was this supposed to be a car illustration that was used in the corner for the FREE PARKING space?
As a child, I would play Monopoly for endless hours with friends from the neighborhood and family. I remember enjoying the Monopoly game illustrations while waiting for my turn to come around again.
I recall thinking this illustration in the corner space looked like an old electrical outlet plug like something that would be used for an old toaster. What did that plug mean in the game? After all, I thought, when you land on that space, it doesn’t do anything!? Did this have something to do with the Electric Company space? But it never helped the Electric Company title deed holder in anyway (nor Water Works which was the other utility property)!? It never made sense but I played anyway. I never understood what the plug had to do with the Free Parking space.
One day I realized that this graphic artwork was an old car, kind of like an antique Ford model-A or Ford model-T from the early 1900’s. These cars didn’t look like this in my generation, so no wonder I didn’t understand the correlation between the two. I often wonder how many others thought the same as me!?
NOTE: The Free Parking corner square does nothing in the original game, however, many people have created their own version of rules for landing upon this space.
