The Shift is a dystopian drama/thriller with some sci-fi elements, and it's loosely based on the story of Job. The movie, at its core, has a message of hope and faith, even when times are dark and bleak and everything feels hopeless.
The main character is a man named Kevin. Kevin has a lovely wife, but when we get some backstory on them, we realize things aren't as happy as they seem. Their marriage is in trouble, for multiple reasons. Kevin is fighting with his wife on the phone while stuck in traffic when his life is changed, possibly forever.
Kevin wakes up in an alleyway with a strange man standing over him. The man introduces himself as The Benefactor and tells Kevin he wants to talk business. But The Benefactor isn't just a normal man. And the business he wants to discuss isn't something Kevin is interested in. What takes place soon after is a battle of wills, but Kevin seems to be on the losing end. But he refuses to give up hope. He's determined to find his way back to his wife, no matter the cost.
I don't want to say anything more about the plot, because I don't want to spoil anything, but this movie is definitely worth seeing in theaters. If you get the chance to go, please do. It's a fantastic film, and even if you don't think dystopian thrillers are your thing, just trust me. It's more than just that. It's a story about a man who seemingly has everything, loses it, and then is put to the ultimate test of faith, hope, and love. It's inspiring and beautiful, even in those stark gray moments.
Neal McDonough is fantastic as The Benefactor. He may not get as much screen time as Kristoffer Polaha, who plays Kevin, but he's powerful and intimidating, and it's easy to see how his character could sway so many of the other characters in the film. He's a master manipulator.
Sean Astin has a fun role. I say fun, but what I mean is, his character isn't what I expected. I've met Sean, and he's the sweetest person on the planet, I swear. Seeing him in the role of Gabriel was delightful, and I like how he played off of both Neal and Kristoffer.
The overall plot and storyline of the movie is absolutely fantastic and will bring forth quite a few emotions from viewers. It's intense, exciting, and full of heart. Please go see it in theaters if you can. It's well worth the watch.
