A 2023 Top Rated Read

Single mum Liv has been commissioned to paint a mural inside a disused lighthouse on a remote Scottish island. She moves into a bothy situated next door with her three children — Saffy, Luna and Clover. The locals, who seem preoccupied with folklore and superstition, tell her about a witch hunt centuries earlier at the exact location where she now lives. Within months of arriving on the island, daughter Luna is the only member of the family left — Liv, Saffy and Clover have all vanished.

Fast forward twenty years and Luna's missing sister Clover turns up alive. But she hasn't aged at all — she's still the same little girl who disappeared years earlier. Luna must face her past and return to the island if she's to discover what really happened two decades ago.

The Lighthouse Witches was an amazing read. So exciting and suspenseful that I didn't want to put it down. It was extremely well plotted and I loved how it came full circle at the end. Ramifications of events centuries earlier were still being felt in the present time. The atmosphere was very creepy and eerie — were supernatural forces at work or could there be a more rational explanation? Such an immersive read and one of my favourites this year.

Synopsis

A deserted lighthouse

Upon the cliffs of a remote Scottish island stands a lighthouse. Strange and terrible events have happened here. It started with a witch hunt. Now, centuries later, islanders are vanishing.

A lost family

Liv Stay and her children don’t believe in witches or curses. But within months of arriving on the island, her daughter Luna is the only one of them left.

An impossible child

Twenty years later, Luna’s missing sister turns up out of the blue. She is exactly the girl Luna remembers. Same face. Same smile. Same age.

Faced with the impossible, it’s up to Luna to find out what really happened at the lighthouse all those years ago.
