A novel to transport you inside a cult

BookTrail the locations in The Running Grave

This is my favourite novel of Strike and Robin so far. There is a new and exciting dynamic here. For much of the novel, Robin is working undercover at the heart of a cult in Norfolk whilst Strike stays behind in London working on this and other cases. How their paths cross, how he supports her (and worries) from the outside, is crime fiction gold.

Ok, let’s get the will they, won’t they question out of the way first. No spoilers and there’s no big move forward but there is a definite change in their relationship. A lot more realisations and personal thoughts. The next book is going to be VERY interesting.

Right, as for the rest of the novel, I thought this was a brilliant exercise in how to convey claustrophobia and tension in as few words as possible, Ok, so the novel is long as is the Galbraith norm, but there is tons of information and danger in every sentence. Robin gets herself invited to join a cult that she and Strike have been asked to investigate. One of their clients son’s is inside and they know there is something very wrong taking place.

When I was trapped in that cult with Robin, the tension! I was a nervous wreck, I had to keep taking a break as  it was genuinely nerve-wracking and I was worried for Robin. Poor Strike! There were many – ooh no don’t’ do that! moments. It really got me thinking about what life in a cult really could be like. Even if a smidge of this is true, it’s very scary indeed.

This is a master class in tension and darn good writing. Hooked from beginning to end. Brilliant. Compelling and utterly immersive. Very impressive in story and character development.
