Our overnight Northlink ferry journey from Aberdeen to Lerwick was filled with excitement due to the report of a rare American thrush species, a Verry, in Lunna, just a 30-minute drive from the terminal.

Sightings of this species are exceptionally scarce, with only 11 previously accepted records. We were elated to learn that the Verry was still present when the news reached us. Ian swiftly shifted into rally car driving mode as we headed north. Anticipating a crowd, we were pleasantly surprised to find only around 15-20 birders present.

The birds sought refuge in a row of sycamore trees along a dry-stone wall, appearing comfortable as they moved in and out of cover, occasionally perching on the fence and granting us fabulous views. Although the lighting conditions were not ideal for capturing great photos, I was thrilled to begin our Shetland experience with a lifer.
