I've lived in a different place every other year for the last few decades it seems, and while the real estate market everywhere seems to be tough, in Juneau, it's pretty limited. A half a million might get you a fixer upper. We've spent years battling it out for homes all over the city only to get outbid or not have our paperwork done in time. That is, until this home came available. My husband was on a routine call for a boiler that wouldn't stop pumping the heat. In a casual conversation, he found out that the mother had passed a few years back, and the father had advanced dementia and would be moving into assisted living. The daughter, who was already busy with her husbands family assets, had decided to sell the house. Without it ever hitting the market, many people had already begun asking to buy it. It seemed pretty far fetched but as a young family, the owner's daughter had compassion for us and decided she would love to see it go a family with small kids than to anyone else who had asked. My husband called me one morning, "he come and look at this house." Me, thinking he wanted coffee, or to just check out the cool view didn't think twice about the possibility of actually owning it! As soon as got to the front door that answer was absolutely YES I want this house! It's been a slow move in process, but I'm in no hurry. Here we are 2.5 years in :)
Cheers!
