How to learn the Great Compassion Mantra in Sanskrit

Part 2: The 5 Sarva… …Karaya’s

So the Great Compassiona Mantra starts with the Invocation to the Triple Jewel and to Gwan Yin Bodhisattva.

Immediately after the Invocation

Immediately after that, we have the 5 Sarva.. …Karaya’s:

Sarva bandhana chedana karaya Sarva bhava samudram shosana karaya Sarva vyadhi prashamana karaya Sarva eti upadrava vinasana karaya Sarva bhaye su trana karaya

Easy way to remember these 5 lines

So all you need to remember here is the 2-4 words of each line between sarva and karaya, namely:

bandhana chedana bhava samudram shosana vyadhi prashamana Eti upadrava vinasana bhaye su trana

And 1, 2 and 5 start with the ba sound.

There’s a timestamp here to the 5 Sarva, karaya’s:

General meaning of Sarva… …karaya

Sarva means All.   Karaya means to do or perform this action.

So these 5 lines mean – do this action to all these things

Line 1: Sarva bandhana chedana karaya

Bandhana rhymes with chedana – so this is an easy way to remember this first line here

Bandhana like a band – it means bonds – any shackles that bind you Chedana means cutting off or removal or destroy

So this first line means break all the shackles that bind.

NB:  Chedana is also the first word of the 5 Great Heart Mantras in the Shurangama Mantra

Line 2: Sarva bhava samudram shosana karaya

Bhava means development or existence – so in this context, it can mean the distress of being born and with that, accompanied by the distress of old age, sickness and death.  So it could mean the distress of rebirth.  It could also mean moods or emotional love. Samudram means ocean Shosana – means drying up

So this 2nd line could mean dry up the ocean of rebirth.  Or it could mean dry up the distress of emotional love – when you love someone but it’s not requited – you suffer – there’s a sea of suffering from these sorts of emotions.  Or it could mean both.

Line 3:  Sarva vyadhi prashamana karaya

Vyadhi means illness, sickness, disease, ailments, sorrows – so any physical or mental illnesses Prashamana means pacifying, curing, healing

So this line means heal all diseases.

Line 4: Sarv-eti upadrava vinasa karaya

Eti means go to Upadrava means troubles, harm, injury, misfortune, calamities Vinasa means destroy or annihilate or vanquished

Go to all harm and misfortunes an annihilate them

Line 5:  Sarva bhayesu trana karaya

Bhaye means fear Trana means protect

Gwan Yin gives fearlessness and courage.  So this means well protect or quickly protect or easily protect from all fear.

Summary

The literal translation to jog the memory is:

All binds cut – do it All existence/rebirth ocean dry it up – do it All illnesses heal – do it All misfortunes annhilate them – do it All fear protect – do it

The meaning translation is:

Destroy all the shackles that bind you – be done Dry up all rebirth existences – be done Heal all illnesses – be done Annihilate all misfortunes – be done Protect from all fear – be done
