The Pinzgauer Spaziergang (eng. Pinzgau Walk) is probably one of the most beautiful high-altitude trails in the Eastern Alps and a classic when it comes to long-distance hiking trails! This hike is a must for every mountain lover and hiking enthusiast. On a total length of almost 18 km, you get to enjoy breathtaking views of the 3000m high mountains of the Hohe Tauern National Park as well as the Leogang Mountains.

You could do this one-way tour from both sides. However, I recommend starting the hike at the Schattenberg Ostgipfel high above Saalbach and finish at the Schmittenhöhe above Zell am See. You can access both points by cable car, so you don’t have to ascend and descend 1000 m. In summer, the Schmittenhöhe cable car runs one hour longer than the Schattenberg cable car. For this reason, I suggest doing the hike from Saalbach to Zell am See and not the other way around.

From the mountain station Schattberg Ostgipfel you start your trek on a well-signposted panorama trail. For ambitious mountaineers, it is always possible to include several peaks along the way. But you should still keep an eye on the time as the regular route is already calculated with about 6 hours.

In my opinion, the two peaks that are absolutely worth climbing are Hochsaalbachkogel 2212 m and Hochkogel 2249 m, which are located right next to each other. From here you can enjoy a spectacular 360° view. Besides many 3000m mountain tops, you can also see the Großglockner, the Kitzsteinhorn and the Großvenediger without any problems.

The Pinzgau Walk will take you along Marxtenscharte, Seetörl, Klinglertörl, Klammscharte and Rohrertörl and eventually leads to Schmittenhöhe – mind you, the last part uphill to the Schmittenhöhe cable car station is quite exhausting, so do save some energy for that. ?

By the way, although this hike is called a “walk”, you should not underestimate it: Good physical condition, suitable footwear and surefootedness are necessary as well as a head for heights when climbing the summits. You may view the entire route here!

Pinzgauer Spaziergang

All in all, this hike is a diverse, family-friendly adventure through high alpine terrain with breathtaking panoramic views and beautiful nature.
