During our working session with a TAB member, we had an interesting conversation about the importance of having a clear vision for the company.

I would like to share some of our findings and explain why having a clear vision should be the starting point for any successful team or organization.

Vision sets the course:

A company’s vision outlines the course that should be taken and what it aims to achieve on its journey. The destination doesn't have to be solely related to economic success; it can also be about the role that the company wants to play for its stakeholders, that is, who it wants to be for its employees, customers, suppliers, and shareholders.

Serves as a framework for recruitment and personnel alignment:

When you have a clear vision regarding the type of company you want to build and the values and organizational culture you want to create, you can more easily find people with the technical skills for various positions who also identify with the company's vision. This not only makes retaining talent easier but also helps in building a team of loyal collaborators. Additionally, having a clear vision helps decide who should not continue on the team; not necessarily because they are poor contributors, but because their personal vision is misaligned with that of the company, making it likely they could shine brighter elsewhere.

Influences motivation and commitment:

If the company's vision aligns with the personal vision of your team, meaning they recognize that achieving the company's vision will also help them towards their personal goals, it generates a high level of motivation and commitment.

Aids in focusing:

If we know where we want to go and how we want to appear when we reach that point, focusing on what truly matters becomes much easier. In other words, the challenging task of prioritizing activities is simplified because we clearly understand which actions lead us toward our vision and which do not.

Enhances decision-making:

Having a clear vision of where we want to go also streamlines the decision-making process. Having a North Star and a destination helps reduce or eliminate uncertainties when making important business decisions and taking action.

Businesspeople must be clear, not only about where they want their companies to take them, but also where they want to lead their companies. This is one of the fundamental keys to business success in these times of change.
