Academy of International Business Who is This Program For?
The Emerging Scholars from Emerging Markets Program (ESEMP) is facilitated by the leadership of AIB’s Emerging Markets Shared Interest Group and made possible through generous support from the Northeastern University Center of Emerging Markets (NUCEM) and AIB Fellows Ravi Ramamurti and Helena Barnard.
ESEMP is for doctoral students and early-career doctorated scholars from emerging markets, who want to create high-quality research and academic papers suitable for submission to AIB conferences and international journals. Students and scholars need to be affiliated with an academic institution located in a country defined as having a low, lower-middle, or upper-middle-income economy by the World Bank (see list of countries here).
ESEMP aims to help young and early-career scholars hone their research skills by providing them with the chance to engage with leading academics in the IB field. Thanks to the stalwart support of ESEMP’s benefactors, the program is free of charge and participants will receive a complimentary one-year AIB membership with all associated benefits. This includes online access to the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of International Business Policy, and AIB Insights.
How Can I Apply for ESEMP?
Applicants will need to submit the following materials via our online application form:
- A current CV
- A letter of motivation (maximum of one page) explaining why they want to participate in the program, and how their research agenda fits with international business in emerging markets
- An extended abstract of a current research project (maximum of three pages, excluding references). This project can be a PhD thesis or parts thereof for doctoral students or a research paper for faculty and post-docs
- A letter of reference from the PhD/doctoral supervisor or a senior colleague (for post-doctoral faculty) at the institution with which they are affiliated
- A declaration in which applicants confirm that they understand that ESEMP is a one-year program, that they will be expected to not only participate in, but also prepare for, the workshops, and that any absences must be communicated to the organizers in advance
The application deadline is 12 October 2026. Decisions will be communicated to successful applicants by 21 November 2026.
How is ESEMP 2026/2027 Structured?
Workshops will be offered via Zoom. There are two ESEMP cohorts (East and West) to accommodate program participants residing in different time zones.
- ESEMP East 2026/2027 will be conducted from 07:00-11:00 UTC on the following dates:
- 17 December, 2026; 11 February, 2027; 8 April, 2027; 3 June, 2027; 19 August, 2027; 18 November, 2027
- ESEMP West 2026/2027 will be conducted from 13:00-17:00 UTC on the following dates:
- 17 December, 2026; 11 February, 2027; 8 April, 2027; 3 June, 2027; 19 August, 2027; 18 November, 2027

ESEMP participants will learn about:
- Theories and debates in international business with a view from emerging markets
- How to find a focus for your research
- How to conduct and write a literature review
- How to contribute to theory
- How to conduct ethical research
- How to gather and analyze data for qualitative and quantitative research
- How to craft a text to guide the reader
- How to claim a contribution
- How to submit to peer-reviewed journals and make sense of feedback
